I would highly, ridiculously highly recommend Strange Angel:The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons. It's about the early days of rocket science centering around Jack Parsons.
It explains the circumstances surrounded the first rocket scientists but Parsons is just an interesting figure. He was involved in Satanism and the early days of Scientology.

I think in a Jack Parson's biography they talk about using Jet, because rockets were those things in the Buck Rogers serials and silly pulpy sci-fi stuff for kids. This was serious military work. Which is why there is a company called Aerojet, and JPL is Jet Propulsion Labs, even if they primarily deal in rockets. On top of that, Jack Parsons was a bit... odd.
