Only the first two are in print and in English. I got the first one at Barnes N Noble in store, and the second one on Amazon.

Volume 1

Volume 2

I'm from the UK. I just ordered the first 2 (and currently only available) light novels a couple of days ago.

Currently, the cheapest place you can buy the 1st book is on Wordery.

It's only 2p cheaper than Amazon. So if you'd prefer to buy from Amazon, go ahead. (I purchased both from Amazon).

The 2nd book is currently the cheapest on Book Depository. This is 85p cheaper than buying from Amazon.

Good luck! And enjoy reading!

The original work, in this case the Light Novel was adapted to manga.

Look to the side and put your mouse over the useful links tab. There you can find the fan-translated novels of SAO vol 1-14. Volume 15 is currently being translated.

They have released Vol 1 and 2 with 3 being released on December 16th. A cycle of 3 novels a year until they catch up to the Japanese.

Advice from an owner - Figmas, however expensive, are not very durable, and prone to breakage even though they have bendable joints. If you must buy them, try to avoid adjusting their pose often.

Nendoroids, on the other hand, are very durable and much cheaper than figmas. They also make great desk ornaments, and I advise that, if you want figures, get them. They look pretty awesome, and who doesn't like cute stuff? (This show's main duo are supposed to be cute together)

Another gift could be the light novels (Volume 1), the source material of the anime. They're very cheap and go into much more detail than the anime; if your sister likes reading, these are the way to go.

And you should give the anime a try! It must be your sister's favorite anime for a reason. :)

Yes it does follow the same plot points, and yes read it from the beginning. Everything is better told in the novels, and you have missed a few character development parts of the story and also one part of ALO which is a foreshadowing of one ALO arc. I can't stress enough how everything is done better in the novels, especially Lizbeth's episode/arc/chapter and the fishing arc.

The links to the novels are on this sub's sidebar.

and I also recommend pre-ordering Volumes 1 & 2 on amazon to support the series. :)

Only the first 3 for now. There are some translations on this sub, but I prefer to just wait. I like holding a book and smelling that new book smell.

Book #1

Book #2

Book #3

I'm still a bit new on figuring out all the different novels and manga, but those are the 3 I have right now. The author is also doing a Progressive story with more details on what happened floor by floor in SAO. The first manga edition is coming this month (Jan. 20th). It has more illustrations, but covers less story (I might actually prefer that since I doubt an anime for the Progressive material will be done so the illustrations are nice). I linked Amazon, but Barnes & Noble carries them, too. Or whatever major bookstore is available where you might live.

Edit: Here is the publisher's site

Reading is fun!

My 11 and 9 year olds don't like to be read to anymore. But they are still super into reading.

My 11 year old loves Greek mythology and Rick Riordan books. He's also into astronomy.

My 9 year old will only read graphic novels and manga.

My 7 year old loves Dr. Seuss. I mean loves. He has started his collection with The Cat in the Hat, Left Foot Right Foot, and Sam I Am.

I normally read to my youngest whenever he asks which is 2-3 times a day. No particular time.

The only time I read to my 9 year old is if she is reading a manga that is translated but it's still in Japanese format (right to left, back to front) and she's having trouble with it.

I'm trying to get my daughter to read light novels (Japanese chapter books with comic like illustrations every 50 pages or so) so she gets used to chapter books. She would like something like this.

u/bomb2chest · 2 pointsr/swordartonline

The manga is meh compared to the Light novels. I would read the LN for sure since the manga does not adapt the LN very good.

Volume 1 LN http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sword-Art-Online-Aincrad-Novel/dp/0316371246/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_y

Volume 2 LN http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sword-Art-Online-Aincrad-Novel/dp/0316376817/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_y

Volume 3 LN http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sword-Art-Online-Fairy-Dance/dp/0316296422/ref=pd_sim_b_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0XWE33FV35W0REB2C705 (This one is not out yet)

The official LN are very behind in English. Only two are released while the third as you can see comes out next month. In Japan 15 volumes are already out. What I recommend is buy these three to obviously support the franchise. If you want to continue reading which I am sure you will since this series is like crack then you can continue with the fan translated volumes. The fan translations are pretty good and can be found on the right hand side under useful links.

Volumes 1&2 cover Episodes 1-14 of the anime. The second volume containing some of the side stories.
Volumes 3&4 cover Episodes 15-25 of the anime.
Volumes 5&6 cover Episodes 1-14 of SAOII anime.
Volume 8(This volume consist of more side stories). Has a side story which is Episodes 15-17 SAOII anime.
Volume 7 covers Episodes 18-24 SAOII anime(Still airing btw).
Volume 9-15 is not animated yet. Also the books are still ongoing.

u/Orimos · 2 pointsr/swordartonline

Only one novel has been officially released in English so far. The second one is coming in August.

I think Barnes and Noble should have it in store. Amazon (link goes to the book) is pretty much my go-to website for online shopping unless they don't have what I'm looking for though.

Unofficially though.. I'm not sure where you could find them any more. They were on Baka-Tsuki but it's been abandoned due to the official licensing.

u/iSwoopz · 2 pointsr/swordartonline

For the physical copies, here is the first one and here is the second. The second doesn't come out until the 26th, though.

u/pkChobo · 2 pointsr/swordartonline

Sword Art Online 1 : Aincrad and Sword Art Online 2: Aincrad

Those are the only two English volumes out so far, though I'm pretty sure volume three should be coming out soonish. Also I'm not sure what the official English releases will be called or if they will follow the same release order but here are the Japanese translations

  • Vol 1 - Aincrad Pt1
  • Vol 2 - Aincrad Pt2
  • Vol 3 - Fairy Dance Pt1
  • Vol 4 - Fairy Dance Pt2
  • Vol 5 - Phantom Bullet Pt1
  • Vol 6 - Phantom Bullet Pt2
  • Vol 7 - Mother's Rosario
  • Vol 8 - Early and Late
  • Vol 9 - Alicization Beginning
  • Vol 10 - Alicization Running
  • Vol 11 - Alicization Turning
  • Vol 12 - Alicization Rising
  • Vol 13 - Alicization Dividing
  • Vol 14 - Alicization Uniting
  • Vol 15 - Alicization Invading

The original work is a light Novel, not a manga. All but the most recent light novel were up on a light novel fan-translation focused website called Baka-Tsuki for all to read not too long ago.

However recently they were taken down because Yen Press licensed the series for localization and publication. (and has since relesed the first book.)

Having had read all but the most recently published book I can honestly say i'm looking forward to season II quite a bit, its a murder-mystery story, going to be quite cool.

u/ParallelPain · 2 pointsr/anime

SAO getting officially translated.

Please support Yen Press and Kawahara Reki by buying it from Amazon or something.

u/Mercarcher · 2 pointsr/anime

Official translations of the first novel is done and it can be found on Amazon

The rest are still being translated officially, but you can download the Fan translations here

The light novels are extremely well written. They go into quite a bit more detail than the anime. 100% worth the read.

Here is the first one, but I hope you get the idea on how to find them. If you want to know the order they're in you can look up the list.

u/canadianaviator · 1 pointr/LightNovels

The Haruhi Series is really good. The anime ran from 1-4 with one chapter of 5. Here is the order

If you have seen Death Note then I would highly recommend Death Note: Another Note by NisiOisiN. It follows a case earlier in L's career. Its only one volume and I love it but you can only read it after you have watched Death Note since it uses some of the same characters.

If you enjoyed the anime you could check out Sword Art Online.

Since you already have Spice and Wolf I can't really recommend any other officially translated ones. You can try this blog for a list of the officially translated light novels.

u/TUSF · 1 pointr/saolightnovel

Volume 1 and 2 of Sword Art Online are available at Amazon (and other retailers). Volume 3 and 4 are up for pre-order.

Sword Art Online Progressive, Volume 1 and 2 are both up for pre-order as well. (Volume 3 isn't even out yet in Japan.)

u/BillBoyTM · 1 pointr/swordartonline

The Light Novels are being officially released in English right now, every few months I believe. You can buy the 1st, 2nd, and pre-order the 3rd on Amazon.com

u/Compupaq · 1 pointr/LightNovels

I picked up Accel World, but haven't had a chance to read much of it. So far, it seems like a quality translation.

Also, the Sword Art Online light novel was released not so recently (April). I haven't read that yet, but I have read some of the Baka-Tsuki translation of it. When I get around to reading it, I'll actually be able to compare the two a little.

u/fickle_floridian · 1 pointr/Fantasy

Outlets like Barnes and Noble and Amazon sometimes use words like "light novel" and "paperback" for the manga. For example, this Amazon listing is for the "light novel", but if you click on it to "look inside" it's clearly a manga, and some of the comments mention this as a caveat to book-seekers (others say the opposite, and there's even a picture from one commenter that shows it to be the novel -- go figure, right?).

https://www.amazon.com/Sword-Art-Online-Aincrad-light/dp/0316371246

That has the exact same cover as this entry at Barnes and Noble:

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/sword-art-online-1-reki-kawahara/1116946707#productInfoTabs

But the comments in the latter seem to suggest that it's actually written word and not manga. But there's really no way to tell short of actually making the purchase and crossing your fingers.

Like I said, you're lucky to have a local bookstore that actually carries them in stock so you can look at them and see what you're getting.

u/Lunares · 1 pointr/anime

If you wanted to be cool you could buy her the actual novels to read (which are officially translated to english for a few volumes)

http://www.amazon.com/Sword-Art-Online-1-Aincrad/dp/0316371246/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411067514&sr=8-1&keywords=sword+art+online

u/Chromium2222 · 1 pointr/swordartonline

Unfortunately I am from the UK, so they won't accept £. However I can order things from Amazon US. What do the first 2 light novels cover? Also, is this #1 of the light novel? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sword-Art-Online-Aincrad-Novel/dp/0316371246/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1410033855&sr=8-1&keywords=sword+art+online

u/acidtreat101 · 1 pointr/LightNovels

Because they are being released in the West you would have to buy them:

http://www.amazon.com/Sword-Art-Online-1-Aincrad/dp/0316371246

You can also acquire them easily on the pirate bay torrent site. I don't think the author has a planned number of books yet.

As for the last thing, just read the novel. Yes and no. That's not exactly right but the idea of time passing differently in the game is.
