The countryside is suffering greatly. Agricultural production is down, and what is harvested is difficult to transport across the country. Light industry there lacks the basic input (from commodities to energy to manpower) to continue producing. The human, social and economic dislocation that it is occurring is massive.

The countryside has felt let down by the regime in favor the cities (I have developed this theme in my book http://www.amazon.com/Syrias-Uprising-Fracturing-Levant-Adelphi/dp/0415717388). The resentment is great and has class as well as sectarian aspects.

Even the rebellion has emphasized these tensions. Many rural rebel fighters feel that they sacrifice a lot more for the sake of the revolution than the urban classes.

This book is out of date, but it explains the origins and what happened during the first few years of the war. A handy primer.
