Well, Snow Crash and Ready Player 1 are just magnificently entertaining reads. Also, Bruce Bethke's 'Head Crash' fits right in there with them.

If you don't mind it being a bit off topic, something that I've found really fun to read is Spritual Machines It's not even Sci-fi, but it reads like it.

EDIT

I can't believe I forgot to mention this, but all the 'current day' parts of Gibson's new book, the Peripheral fall into the timeline you're looking for as well. Also, his entire bridge trilogy, which was REALLY great, and his writing style became a bit more fluid in the second trilogy. I find people who had trouble with Neuromancer, don't have the same issues with Virtual Light.

Really funny - I'm actually reading quite a bit about this recently (The Age of Spiritual Machines by Ray Kurzweil) and (if I'm understanding it right) heat death represents a state of maximum entropy (i.e. if the moment of the big bang represented perfect order then the other end of that spectrum would be maximum entropy) which would be maximum chaos.

So actually I'm working hard to bring about heat death faster! Priceless!

Demon Haunted World is so good - it's in my "big three," books that really helped me change my worldview. The other two are A Brief History of Time and the deliciously amoral The 48 Laws of Power.

If you lean towards the nerdy, Ray Kurzweil's The Age of Spiritual Machines and The Singularity is Near are also quite interesting. They lay out a fairly stunning (and strangely convincing) optimistic view of the future.

It's a bit dated now, but Ray Kurzweil's The Age of Spiritual Machines is a fascinating look at where Kurzweil believes the future of AI is going. He makes some predictions for 2009 that ended up being a little generous, but a lot of what he postulated has come to pass. His book The Singularity is Near builds on those concepts if you're still looking for further insight!

While all his books are great. He talks a lot about exponential growth in "The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence" and "The Singularity Is Near: When Humans Transcend Biology"

His most recent book, "How to Create a Mind" is also a must read.

Do you live in Austin, TX?
Do you play in a band?
In 2005 did you let someone borrow the book The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence by Ray Kurzweil
If so, I have your book.

Why Kasparov? Read that name somewhere recently?

Have you ever read The Age of Spiritual Machines? I think you'd dig it.

Have you read any of Kurzweil's books on this subject? If not, Age of Spiritual Machines is a great start.

Ah, the singularity (when machines surpass humans) is basically the only thing that allows me to sleep at night. Ray Kurzweil's book The Age of Spiritual Machines: When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence is fantastic, his vision of the future is one that I can look forward to.
