I felt the exact same way when I started woodworking. And while I'm no means anywhere close to a master, I think I'm pretty mediocre. It's so overwhelming, especially when you see the incredibly advanced projects people submit here!
What really helped me was purchasing a kit that included a drill, jigsaw, and circular saw. I also ended up purchasing a mouse sander. For me these were the most basic tools I needed to build really simple projects. My first was a set of window boxes. I also got this book that has projects you can build with hand tools.

The most important things I learned were from trial and error like why I should drill a hole before putting in a screw, how to measure accurately, etc. I still have a lot to learn, but I have enough confidence to tackle bigger and bigger projects.
I also found that buying tools for specific projects was the best way to go. I didn't have a miter saw for a long time until I had a project where I needed a lot of small pieces the same length. Measuring, clamping, then cutting with a circular saw can get very tedious. I recently picked up a Kreg Jig for a patio table and it had changed my life! Basically, don't try to totally stock up in the beginning. You'll also spread out the cost, which is nice.
Find something you want to make, with very detailed instructions and dive in! You'll be great!
