There's a book called "The Damage Done" by Warren Fellows, a smuggler who served something like 10 or 11 years in Bangkwang I read a while back. Definitely worth a read.

Edit: Amazon link. IIRC at one point in the book (and real life), an inmate dies from drinking pig blood because the pig ate the last of said inmates heroin.

Police bribery in Thailand is a real issue. It sounds ludicrous, but it's a real problem. The justice system in Thailand is corrupt.

I don't say this wearing a tin foil hat. There's many documented cases. There's an excellent book where a guy is forced to admit a murder. They beat him almost to death, and tortured him, until he signed the confession. Here it is: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Damage-Done-Twelve-Bangkok-Prison-x/dp/184018275X

If you can pay the bribe they request you're let go and it's all forgotten about.

I can't comment on whether he was guilty or not. I just know their legal system is nothing like ours. He already suffered a number of years living in brutal inhumane conditions. He's in the UK now where they should be able to decide whether or not to release him and whether his current time served is punishment for his crime.

I’ve just checked the reviews on Amazon and this first one says the cockroaches got in through the ear and lay eggs:

This is going to get buried because I'm late, but if anyone is interested in reading more about prison conditions in Asia then I strongly suggest reading The Damage Done by Warren Fellows.

"In 1978, Warren Fellows was convicted in Thailand of heroin trafficking and was sentenced to life imprisonment. The Damage Done is his story of an unthinkable nightmare in a place where sewer rats and cockroaches are the only nutritious food, and where the worst punishment is the khun deo - solitary confinement, Thai style. A member of a criminal gang recently gave a friend of mine and I a different perspective on life in the East (we've travelled most of it, and we love it). For example, we've always loved Thailand. He on the other hand and his criminal buddies hate it. He's got a friend locked up there now for 50 years, with no hope of due legal process. Now his friend did break the law, but I can't help but agree with him that Thailand and many other Eastern countries out there are really backwards when it comes to human rights. It's funny, because about 2 months prior to him telling us this, a guy who my dad knows was just released from an Indian prison after 12 years on suspicion (no trial) of somehow being involved with drug smugglers. Stuff like this kinda makes you think about the downsides you never really think of.

Not that this has anything to do with a topic, but IMO it's a lot more interesting than hearing the same ex pat spiel over and over again...
