I got a physical disk from Half Price Books for less then $10.

It's on amazon for $7 if you're ok with a disk

I think Amazon ships internationally. Their international shipping rates look pretty reasonable, too.

What is your excuse to buy DRM Morrowind on steam while you can get real Morrowind with a map on Amazon for $10? http://www.amazon.com/The-Elder-Scrolls-III-Morrowind-Pc/dp/B0000CNUUP

I'd say $9.65 is pretty cheap. The hard copy is worth buying because the map they include comes in really handy.

Truth be told, you're probably better off just downloading off Steam or Impulse.

Anyways, if you are set on a physical copy, you can get it off Amazon for a decent price. Sure, you get an extra copy of Morrowind, but oh well. Yes, the expansions come on separate disks.

Your other option is eBay (Bloodmoon) (Tribunal). While I've had nothing but good eBay experiences, you do run a risk and it is generally just more of a hassle.

I don't think you can beat many of the RPG's for depth (in terms of content, immersion, etc) so I'll stick to those.

Baldur's Gate series, Fallout series (the older ones especially!), Icewind Dale series, Dragon Age, Mass Effect - in short, basically anything from Bioware. If I had to choose one among that list it would probably be Baldur's Gate 2 - it isn't easy to convey how deep the game is so just check it out and see for yourself.

A lot of these games I mentioned are older and are available cheaply in collections (talk about value for money!). You may need to do a little bit of tweaking to run them on Vista or Win 7 but it is easy to find directions online with a little bit of searching:
Baldur's Gate Box Set $19.99 on Amazon.com
Fallout Trilogy $16.61 on Amazon.com
Icewind Dale Collection $20.98 on Amazon.com

I'd probably also recommend Morrowind (from Bethesda) and Oblivion, though I'd recommend Morrowind over Oblivion if you had to pick one.

If RPGs aren't your cup of tea, I also have a short list of shooters that offer tactical depth in single-player and/or develop their game worlds well:
The Orange Box (HL2 + Expansions), Far Cry (trust me on this one it is actually a decently long FPS that can be quite engaging and tactical), Crysis (if you have a strong enough PC to run it, you'll find it offers some very intense and involved firefights).

If you like music, Audiosurf is a lot of fun (and I expect it gets better with painkillers).

Rush is a fun puzzler, I think it should run well on lower-end graphics.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is an older RPG (Oblivion is the sequel, and Skyrim will be coming out later this year). Will definitely run on most anything (recommended CPU is an 800 MHz Pentium III).

Magicka is quite fun, an action-adventure game with magic.

Minecraft will eat up tons of your time easily (I stayed up until 5:00 this morning playing it), and there will be wolves/dogs soon.

Civilization IV Complete (or on Steam) will make you wonder why the clock is showing noon when it was 9:00 PM a couple of hours ago (and not regret a minute of it). Civ V is decent, but I'd wait for a sale or a major update that everyone loves before buying.

OpenTTD is a free Transport Tycoon Deluxe clone (a predecessor to Roller Coaster Tycoon), lots of fun.

The Orange Box will likely run on your computer if it's fairly new (there are a couple of demos available (Half-Life 2 and Portal, click the download demo button). If they run, anything else from Valve should be okay (and they're all good games).

If you get an Xbox 360, here's a decent list of games.

TEST POST. This edition of Morrowind contains the full game as well as the "Tribunal" and "Bloodmoon" expansion, making it the only way to obtain them on the Xbox. It does not contain the eight free add-ons exclusive to the PC version, which are:

  • Entertainers

  • Bitter Coast Sound Effects

  • Area of Effect arrows

  • Helm of Tohan

  • Master Index

  • LaFemm Armor

  • Adamantium Armor

  • The Siege at Firemoth

You can purchase it here at Amazon for PC and Xbox.

For anybody that doesn't have Morrowind, the game is available on Steam, or on Amazon in disk form. Note that it's cheaper on Amazon. It also should play on Windows 7.
