I remember loving Nina Simone's music since I was able to pick what I wanted to listen to. I would sing 'Sinnerman' at the top of my lungs in the car, seduce paramours with my rendition of 'I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl', imagine my revenge to 'Pirate Jenny', cheered up to 'Feelin' Good', shared the outrage of 'Strange Fruit' and shed many a tear to 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'. Hell just thinking about 'Ne Me Quitte Pas' is enough dampen my eyes. I remember with elation when it was quietly announced that she would do one last American tour. I saved my pennies for months! By the time I could purchase the tickets they were already sold out in NYC. I cast a wider net to find the show in Philadelphia still had tickets. I bought three and drug two dear friends along that had no idea why it was such a big deal. I drove, we ate pizza, concert was beyond words, I hit a deer on the highway on the way back (she lived!). In the end I was just so very glad and grateful that I, decidedly younger than most of her audience, managed to see her perform. When she passed away, it was like a light went out. I was in mourning for longer than I am comfortable admitting here.
