I think that's the point though. I've read and re-read the books, including this:

The Girl Who Was on Fire (Movie Edition): Your Favorite Authors on Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games Trilogy https://www.amazon.com/dp/1936661586/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_snFfkZAmzUnLA

After reading the above book it just goes much more into the symbolic topics and I just think the ending was written the way it was because the hunger games is not a love story. It's meant as a commentary on modern society and the way it ends is about as "happily ever after" anything involving children killing each other can. It's meant as a warning; it is meant to be sobering and for us to think about the consequences of egotism and violence and how that directly connects to our modern reality and how we can often deify violence and competition as well as how technology can completely anethesize us from actual reality and what people face in poverty.
