The first season is actually based on a book by Tom Perrotta who was involved in the entirety of the show.
I personally think the finale left the ambiguity of The Departure in a perfect position. It was a question impossible to answer, but it was a perfect event to examine the human condition. The show is really a love story between Nora and Kevin, and how they overcome their problems.
