I've also seen quite a bit of research (summarised in this book) indicating that early motherhood can often be motivated by a desire for meaning/actualisation for people who are systemically locked out of achieving meaning through high-prestige careers or education, which is true for many African-Americans and African-American women in particular.
Read about it in this book which I don't have to hand at the moment. Google Books on that book helped me dig up this paper on the subject.
