Regarding Philosophy in "The Matrix", I would point you to the book 'The Matrix and Philosophy: Welcome to the Desert of the Real' as compiled by William Irwin. It's an interesting compilation of essays written about philosophical issues presented by the movie and, on a personal note, played a major role in getting me hooked on philosophy.
They have classes on The Wire and in my philosophy class we spent a fair amount of time studying The Matrix....
