The best textbook series for beginning Chinese learners Rapid Literacy in Chinese.

The book has 25 chapters, each chapter introduces 30 words / 20 characters. You study the words / characters and then there are example sentences. As you progress the sentences turn into paragraphs which then culminate into a 2 page essay. Each chapter uses characters you memorized in the chapter before.

If you are learning Chinese for the long-haul I would also recommend [The Most Common Chinese Radicals](http://www.amazon.com/Most-Common-Chinese-Radicals-Edition/dp/7800525767/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_y/187-7432921-8562433

It seems daunting but study the radicals first, understand them and learning new characters in the future will be easier.

Also for reading purposes I would recommend learning characters before learning too many words. I used remembr.it and it was a godsend. It introduces you characters (not words) in a very systematic way. I did it relgiously everyday for 5 months and finished the 2300 characters. When you understand character meanings your ability to learn new words increases rapidly.

Best of luck in your studies.

Well you could look at his books. For me, the exercise of writing out the "部首三字经" heightened my awareness of character composition. Amazon link here. Perhaps the other books aren't so helpful, though I quite like this. I don't know if any of his ideas about the nature of Chinese or how to teach it can be found online.
