If you like games (especially RPGs), Chris Hardwick wrote a book called The Nerdist Way: How to Reach the Next Level (In Real Life) that's largely focused on what's basically a form of CBT where you make yourself a character sheet like from an RPG and set goals and things and sort of gamify the process of going from where you are now to a hopefully better place down the road closer to where you want to be (to "level up").

The Nerdist Way by Chris Hardwick, which was really helpful for me to understand my anxiety and find a balance between taking care of myself without feeling self-centered.

Super You: Release Your Inner Superhero by Emily V. Gordon is also really wonderful. It's an autobiography/self-help book that talks about how everyone has a superpower, and finding what that is can really help you appreciate yourself and others.

If it helps you to look at the world, yourself, and your problems in this fashion, then I really suggest reading The Nerdist Way. It breaks down self help in a very D&D way, it's really interesting at the very least. There's apps out there that will also help you in that same vein. Developing a skill or overcoming challenges becomes "leveling up" and it's great for the nerds and gamers who have been conditioned since childhood to achieve things in that way.

Well. I was having a pretty rough go at things earlier this year. And my BFF said he was going to send me something. I had no idea what, but he said he thought it would help.

I got home to two packages from amazon. One was The Nerdist Way. and the other was a kindle paper white. Both were completely unexpected. Also, this means I'm not entering to win a kindle lol.

Anyhow, I hadn't heard of the Nerdist Way before. And I was thinking "okay... So my friend sent me a self help book... Alright. Well. Yeah."

So I crack the cover on this thing and start reading. It was like Chris Hardwick sat down one day and said "hmm today I'm going to write a book just for /u/gemcitytiffany. That's how it felt. Like the book was written specially to me.

Yeah, it's a "self help" book, but it's written by a nerd for nerds. And his story is so inspiring. And it's no bullshit. And he gives you real tools to work with emotionally, mentally and even just amazing concepts on how to seriously organize and manage your life better. Chris Hardwick knows how nerds work. He knows exactly how I was feeling. It was almost bizarre to have it all spelled out to me.

But it was really awesome to have solutions spelled out as well. It's interesting how I dismissed some of the things in the book right off. Sentences, paragraphs, hell entire chapters. "These things don't apply to me." But eventually all of the words meant something. They stuck with me. Rolled around in the back of my head.

I started eating better, started exercising, started managing my time better, replying to emails, started setting myself up for success. I started to worry less and panic less. I started to take stock of my life and what I had going for me. Chris teaches you to build yourself a character sheet for yourself. Like a card game. A list of your strengths and things you've got to work with.

I put it all to work. I started my little company and I'm still working hard on it every single day. I stopped drinking. I started spending the time and money I used to spend on alcohol on being productive.

Ehm. I think I'm starting to write my own book here, so I will get to the point.

Last night I was talking to a good friend of many years who has been really down in the dumps. He's feeling trapped at his job. Uninspired. Unproductive. He'd been drinking and punching walls all evening. We talked for a while and I told him I was sending him something. I put my copy of The Nerdist Way in an envelope and printed up a shipping label. I hope it finds him well. I hope it can inspire him a little.

I don't know about linking anything from my list. I feel like I just wanted to talk about this book. But really, almost everything on my list is something related to my business. The convention list is all stuff I'm buying a bit at a time before October one way or another.

/u/ChrisHardwick wrote a book about doing the exact opposite of this! "The Nerdist Way: How to Reach the Next Level (In Real Life)" is a self-help-ish book that encourages the reader to look at themselves as an RPG character an "level up" their skill sets through gaining "XP" in doing every day task that they want to accomplish.

It's a great read for any MMO/tabletop player who wants to get off their ass and be motivated!
