I'd be happy to help you out in finding something you like.

First, before I continue, I just want to address all of the downvotes you're getting. I'm probably going to get downvoted to hell for saying this myself, but I don't really care because I just want to help you out. Since it doesn't seem like you visit Nintendo subreddits that much, you haven't really seen how toxic a lot of Nintendo fans are on the Nintendo subreddits. On these Nintendo subreddits, usually, if you say anything remotely negative about Nintendo or anything that sounds like it insults something related to Nintendo, a lot of people start downvoting you and getting mad because a lot of them act like blind fanboys and can't take any criticism. If you go on /r/nintendoswitch, you'll definitely see this a lot (a perfect example is the posts that were made when the Nintendo Labo was first announced and all of the Nintendo fanboys were going crazy when anybody insulted it for being $70 - $80 cardboard). Things usually get better on these Nintendo subreddits as a system gets older since the people who stick around are the people who truly care about the system and its games and can handle criticisms. If you go to /r/n64 or /r/gamecube, for example, the people there are really cool, and those are really great communities. /r/3ds is starting to get better as the 3DS gets older, but it'll still take a bit of time for those Nintendo fanboys to trickle out. Since the Switch is new, /r/nintendoswitch is infested with those kinds of people and /r/nintendo is just always filled with those people.

The 3DS is a fantastic system, and personally, I think it's one of the best video game handhelds ever made. It has a fantastic lineup of games, and now is one of the best times to get into it since the system already has a huge lineup of amazing games and a lot of them are cheap. However, there are some really great games that are expensive if you want a new physical copy of the game (like Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright or Rhythm Thief).

If you want some games with great stories, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D is a fantastic start (it's my favorite Zelda game), but I would also recommend checking out the Professor Layton games, Kid Icarus Uprising, Bravely Default & Bravely Second, The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask 3D, Fire Emblem Echoes, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright (this game is very, very story driven), and Fantasy Life.

Since you're saying you like rhythm games, you should check out Rhythm Heaven Megamix on the eShop (that's the only place you can buy it and it's the newest Rhythm Heaven game), the original Rhythm Heaven on the DS (it's currently $10 at GameStop), and Theathrythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call (Don't pick up the first Theatrhythm game. Get Curtain Call because it has all of the content of the first plus more.).

Since you liked Katrielle Layton, you should check out the newest one on the 3DS (I haven't played it but it seems good), and like I said earlier, you should check out the Professor Layton games (Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy are great).

Since you liked TWEWY, you also might like Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (I haven't played it in years now but it was a really great game) or TWEWY on the DS.

Recently, Nintendo gave a lot of their older titles price drops and labeled them as "Nintendo Selects" titles. They now cost $20 and a lot of them are really amazing games. Check out this page on their website to see the list of Nintendo Selects games. I would highly recommend them.

Looking at my collection of 3DS games, these are the best ones that I would very highly recommend (I'm going to be repeating some of the games that I already said): Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, Kid Icarus Uprising, Pilotwings Resort (people don't talk about this game much but it's one of my favorites), New Super Mario Bros. 2 (as much hate as the series gets, I really liked this version), Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Fire Emblem Awakening, Animal Crossing New Leaf (in my opinion, it's the best 3DS game), Project X Zone 1/2, Mario & Luigi Dream Team (it starts slow but I still really enjoyed it), Professor Layton Miracle Mask & Azran Legacy, Pokemon X/Y (just one of them), The Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds (an absolute must play), Tomodachi Life (not sure if you'll like this but I enjoyed it), Bravely Default & Bravely Second, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call, Super Smash Bros for 3DS (also an absolute must play), Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask 3D, Fantasy Life, Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright, Fire Emblem Fates (both Birthright and Conquest), Mario & Luigi Paper Jam, Kirby Planet Robobot, Miitopia, Fire Emblem Echoes, Metroid Samus Returns, Ultimate NES Remix, and Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions.

I know that you're saying that you want to buy digital games for the convenience of it, but I would highly recommend you purchase all of your games physically. I wrote a post about this almost two years ago, and I still stand by it today. If you want to see why I think you should stick with physical copies, click here.

I hope that gives you a good idea of what is available to you on the 3DS, and I hope this post helps you out. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask me. Have fun with your 3DS! Your wife made a great decision in buying you a 3DS, and I'm sure you'll love it!

$19.99 on Amazon with Prime Shipping. Not entirely sure when it ends. It's been this price since at least Black Friday.

Anyone have this game? Is it like a true Final Fantasy or is it a completely different style of game? The screenshots don't really interest me.

They're both great games, but TFF:CC will be easier to find for less money at this point. It's about $20 on Amazon. I'm not particularly "good" at rhythm games, even though I enjoy playing them, and I'm definitely no expert at which one will sate an avid fan of them, but here's my thoughts as a n00b:

Theatrhythm Curtain Call: (CC)

  • Songs tend to be shorter and snipped down a bit
  • Timing doesn't need to be as precise
  • More variety in rhythm gameplay (battle, event, and field/overworld)
  • More songs that span the entire series and a few extra ones in the Square Enix catalog
  • Fanservice - collecting your favorite characters to use and equip stuff in a useless RPG system.
  • You can swap out different characters in your team for different songs/stages.
  • Play versus (It needs to be unlocked)
  • Two save files
  • Quest Medley mode lets you play through a set of songs and unlocks some portions of the game.

Because of the first two reasons, I would say CC is more forgiving than Project Mirai DX. In terms of the music, I liked the song variety that CC provides more. Some beautiful orchestral tracks, 8-bit melodies, and even some Koda Kumi. I also found the beat much easier to identify and follow along to in CC, rather than DX where you follow the vocal line more.

Hatsune Miku: Project Mirai DX: (DX)

  • Much cuter, no wait Way cuter chibis
  • You can have extensive photoshoot sessions, using the Camera Mode, of your Vocaloid partner doing stuff like eating, sleeping, etc.
  • The sim elements let you dress your Vocaloid partner, feed them, give them money, play against them in Reversi, and decorate their home.
  • Download play for versus Puyo Puyo! (only one cart is needed)
  • Timing needs to be more exact
  • The track visually moves around sporadically in different patterns, so it's a bit harder to follow on the screen.
  • There's an alarm clock
  • Vocaloids can wear different clothes if you unlock them for their songs/performances.
  • You make a little choregraphed dance that can be shared with Streetpass.
  • AR functionality. They have the AR cards of the different vocaloids and their poses on the PM:DX site under Sega, which you can print out and use. (The Launch Edition provided them already.)

    Both:

  • The 3DS can be closed, and the games' music players will still continue to play.
  • Both have similar Streetpass functions where you give the other person a customized card.
  • A stylus Tap mode is available, but CC registers your preference between stylus or buttons, while DX simply gives you both modes for every song.

Good call. Purchased one on Amazon used for $10. Wish I could have had it on my system but for $10 cheaper totally worth.
