I have fixed this problem in my controller before, and it just came from using R2 so much. I noticed it when playing games that used pressure sensing on R2. I took my controller apart and found the R2 rubber conductive part was split. So I fixed it by cutting a small circular piece of plastic packaging (hard) and super gluing on top of the button. I could not find the rubber conductive pads for sell at the time. But they do sell them now, for example

I have no idea of the quality of those, since i fixed mine. But that most likely is your problem is the button split.
