Alternatively, you could use these, which create the same effect without damaging books. It's a bit more expensive, but I've liked them.
I still recommend having or finding a "sacrificial" book to put on the bottom, though. It won't get damaged, but getting to it will be a pain.
You're right A bookend also wouldn't allow the back of the cover to stay up.
