I paint pretty much entirely larger minis (54mm, 75mm, and up). For my stuff, I've got a jewelers vice/clamp. You can find them on amazon for around $15.

To hold the figure, I normally put pins (short pieces of paper clip) into the feet and then clamp down onto the pins. When I finish the figure, those pins will then help fix the figure to the base. In your case the figure already has a base. But I'd assuming you can use the pins that come with the vice, insert those into the holes, and then clamp down onto the base of the figure. The idea behind the jewelers vice is that you can arrange the pins to clamp on to all sorts of different shapes. You may also find the handle is more comfortable to use that the chessex case lids and make use of it on the smaller figures too!
