For a really good DIY setup that is WAY better than anything you can get from the plug and play cameras (like Ring etc. which require stupid subscriptions):

- An NVR (also available via Amazon), or a reasonable fast dedicated PC/laptop running "Blue Iris" software
Been running 3 of these for over a year, really high resolution and rock solid reliability.
Whatever you choose, go hard-wired ethernet rather than wireless. Wireless is unreliable because it's prone to interruptions in connectivity.
I use these cameras all around the house paired with the latest branch of ZoneMinder which has come a long way in the past year; on top of Ubuntu 18.04.
The cameras have fantastic quality.

I bought a POE switch and Blue Iris, working good so far.
Just build your own in house CCTV System.
Camera's are cheap and you can setup Zoneminder on a spare laptop or even a Raspberry Pi.
Depending on the number and quality of cameras you intend to use, you can set it up on an alternative like an Orange Pi or BeagleBoard X15
