Hi. 3-month-long fighter here. So my local group was cool enough to have loaner gear, which is what I used when I just started. It fit poorly and really slowed me down, so I bought my own gear pretty fast.

I spent about $1k, but if I had scrimped a bit I could have gotten it down to $500, maybe less.

The helmet is the most expensive piece. I got mine from ironmonger
A lot of my gear is hockey gear, from hockeymonkey.com. I wear it under a set of ratty garb-esque clothes I bought off a much larger friend.

Get a heavy hockey girdle and hockey knee/shinpads pads. For chest protection the cheapest armor I've seen with good protection is motocross or motorcycle armor, though I actually made a wisby-style coat of plates myself, using pickle-barrel plastic. A lot of people I know use hockey chest/shoulder protectors from hockey monkey, usually along with other rigid protection on the torso. I also wear a padded kidney belt. For chest armor, maybe something like this. I once fought with a guy who wore stuff like this. He said the big weak spot was the sides of the ribcage. He actually strapped a few padded pickel-barrel plates there. You're also going to want to add some rigid elbow cops, maybe bokalo.

A lot of it is cobbled together and may require modification. I bolted a set of bokalo aluminum cops to my knee/shinpads (just to give my knees a bit better protection), and added a few plastic lames to cover my lower thigh / top of my knee a bit better.

If you really really need cheap, dark victory sells a really cheap suit of armor. But you get what you pay for. It's uncomfortable, hot, and restricts movement. I'm using a heavily modified set of their elbow cops and demi gaunts (I covered them in leather, did some reshaping and cutting, and added thumb guards to the demi's).
