I personally use a http://www.amazon.com/VisionTek-120GB-Pocket-Drive-900718/dp/B00O0NV5HU as a multiboot and will be getting a second one as a dedicated portable OS install for windows.
Yes, you could make a bootable usb for this, but I wouldn't recommend it. USB flash drives aren't really made for lots of writing so they will not last nearly as long as a proper SSD.
Also, with regards to performance, if you get one of those SSD thumbdrives like this one you'd probably have really good performance, but again, not very reliable for long term.
None that I'm aware of, but USB3 SSDs are pretty fast. I've had one of these for quite a while and it makes a decent emergency boot drive. One of my former coworkers has one of these in addition to the one I have and said it's even faster.

The only issue that I ran into was it gets hot.
It is an SSD in a thumb drive form factor.
Find the OLDER version if you can - The newer version is slower.

Otherwise, that's just stupid. That cheap piece of shit keyfob in your pocket isn't a magic wand. It's made for reads, not writes. And certainly not OS writes.
I mean something like this vs something like this From my understanding you can purchase an HD USB stick and a SSD USB stick, is that wrong? If so why is there such a large price difference when both are 3.0 and use the same storage?
