I second what /u/watsonthesane said.

For helmets, just go to your local bike shop and try ones out. Find one that fits well and is comfortable. You'll also want a bike pump. At a minimum, you'll need to add air once a week, so it is good to have around. It is good to have one with a gauge so you don't over inflate the tire. To know how much air you need, look on the side of the wheel. You'll see XX-XX PSI. Just pump the tire in between those two numbers.

And lastly, security. This sort of depends on how prone your area is to bike theft. This could range between a low end [cable lock] (http://www.amazon.com/Wordlock-CL-454-BL-Non-Resettable-Combination-4-Feet/dp/B003HC83BG/ref=sr_1_3?s=cycling&ie=UTF8&qid=1409944142&sr=1-3), to a solid u lock, to the "mega chain". If the wheels are [quick release] (http://s1.hubimg.com/u/241092_f520.jpg) (looks like a level in the middle of the wheel), you might want to switch to an axle with a bolt, which requires a wrench to take off. I would recommend talking to someone at the bike shop in your area about what they think you'll need.
