This remote pales in comparison to the Xbox 360 Media Remote. We still have (3) 360s in our home, but the XO replaced our bedroom 360. From what I can tell, you have to have a kinect and paste IR blasters on your electronics in order for the XO Media Remote to control anything other than the console alone. I don't know if the decision to omit the programmable portion or TV power button was to push kinect integration or if it was a cost issue, but it totally sucks. With the 360 remote, one remote was all that was needed. Now, I have to keep using the 360 remote in addition to the XO remote... what a hassle.

Sorry for the rant... but related to the OP, that would be a nice feature. Unfortunately, as Fred mentioned, the battery drain would be substantial and IR severely limits that proposal. I'd be all in if they could produce a remote that operates on the same radio band as the controllers, was rechargable via Micro-USB and supported plugging a headset into. I'd pay $60+ for something like that.

  1. As others have said, a celeron NUC is more than powerful enough these days for high bitrate 1080p video playback. It will almost certainly not fair well with next gen software-decoded h.265 content. You need a beast for that stuff. Fortunately, hardly any of that exists.

  2. Since you are using Kodi on your Note 2, you don't need transcoding, so it doesn't really matter how strong the CPU of the server is. Your Note 2 is performing the video decoding.

I've got the DN2820FYK running OpenELEC. I pretty much never need to restart it. Here's my setup:

    4GB DDR3L RAM

    Xbox 360 Remote

Rosewill MCE Remote for after I got sick of the 360 remote not having a stop button.

Getting an SSD is overkill, but I like it because it ensures the NUC is quiet and boots about as fast as possible. All of them are small enough. Here's one with decent reviews that's especially small.

As far as noise goes, I've never personally heard the NUC. I live in an apartment though. It's possible if you put it in some kind of sound deadened room, you might hear it, if you've got really good ears.

I use this https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005FMLZQQ/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497567943&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=xbox+360+remote

But it works with other remotes. Interestingly, my new Samsung remote works with it too right out of the box.

It works just like live TV. If you have used a DVR, you wouldn't notice the difference.

I use the remote, which has no on/off switch unfortunately :/

Indeed it does. Infact the 360 premium originally came with this little remote.

I'm looking at that one. The biggest thing I'm worrying about is being able to re-program the buttons. I'm going to be switching out of programs and emulators launched from XBMC on full screen with no mouse or keyboard so I need a button I can program ALT-F4 too

not really that great of a deal

  • Controller - $37.34

  • Remote - $16.50

  • HDMI Cable - $4.41

  • 3 Months Gold - $14.98

    Total Cost - $73.72

Also I didn't look that hard but on most of those I'm sure even better deals could be found. I do see the merit in paying a little extra to get it all in one package and also have the convenience of buying from a store and avoiding the wait for shipping.

Thanks, you've saved me from spending a pretty penny on something that wouldn't work anyway. Is this the remote control you were referring to?

I would ask you if it works natively with Plex, but you're using OpenPHT. I prefer PMP (to each their own of course), but I read in the wiki that you can customise the input map, so that should offer some tweaking options.

Does the remote work through IR or RF? Do you have any recommendation on a IR/RF receiver that works best with these remotes (my laptop does not have an IR receiver)?

Thanks again for your time.
