Get the play and charge kit (or just buy the batteries if you can find them) and then get a quick charge kit.
Messing around the AA batteries is annoying. The rechargeable ones are so much better.
The stock, wired headset is fine. Still use mine to this day. I've tried a couple of aftermarket ones and the wireless one, and I still prefer the original.

I used to have this thing for charging the removable battery packs, and this for when I wanted to play while I charged. Are you talking about those pads where put the whole controller on it, like this Nyko thing?
I don't know if your iphone adapter will work. I don't know it's volt and amp ratings. However, there is the XBOX 360 Quick Charge Kit that plugs into an outlet.
