I had killer shin splints for several weeks in my training & thought I might have to give up running. Then I found the wonder of KT tape. (You can see the shin-splint placement video here.) It's used by physical therapy & sports medicine folks (you've probably seen professional athletes with it on shoulders or knees, etc). It made a huge difference for me. You can order it online or pick it up at most sports/running stores and even at WalMart if you're in the States.
I wore these compression sleeves after runs (and during my 1st 5k race because I was paranoid the KT tape would come off, which it never did). I started off with one, then got one for the other leg.
The combination of KT tape and Compression Sleeves is awesomesauce. They got me through the worst of my shin splints and now I haven't had them for 7 or 8 months!
