I had a rough time with shin splints for much of the first half of my training. Several recommendations. First, disclaimer, I'm not a PT, OT, Osteopath, MD, etc... Talk to a professional to determine the exact cause of your pain (what we call "shin splints" can be any of about 3 different conditions of varying severity).

That said, this is a really helpful article on Medial Tibial stress syndrome, which sounds similar to what you are describing.

Once you're sure you're dealing with this and not the muscle sack rupturing (ewww), there are a few things that I did that were a big help. This article (also available in the sidebar under stretching & strengthening) and this give you good exercises to help strengthen your legs and prevent shin splints.

KT tape can be used for all kinds of injuries, the link is specifically for shin splints. I was finding myself unable to complete runs because of my shin pain and running with KT tape literally stopped my shins hurting on runs -- amazing!

I also bought a compression sleeve and wore it after I iced after my runs. Highly recommend.

I always ice my shins & knees when after running to help with any soreness and swelling. In my experience I have less soreness and stiffness that day and the next when I ice. Your mileage may vary.

The same thing was happening to me and then eventually I ended up pulling my calf muscle. For me though it was a lack of potassium and sodium in my diet. This is probably really gross but if I drank like an ounce of pickle juice before and after my runs the pain went away. I also bought compression sleeves not that exact brand but I wear them after my runs and just around the house and that helped alot too.
