A Zoom H5 might work better for you as it has the two XLR inputs just like the Zoom H4n but you also have the option of using the onboard XYH-5 capsule, or change it out for two extra XLR inputs using the EXH-6 capsule , or getting close up sound effected using the SGH-6 shotgun microphone capsule. The downside is that it comes in a wee bit more expensive than the Zoom H4n for the base model and the capsules are extra after that aside from the XYH-5 which comes with the H-5.

A mixer with six XLR inputs like a Mackie ProFX12 ($229)

Or an audio interface like a FocusRite Scarlett 18i20 ($499) with eight XLR inputs.

Or a Zoom H6 recorder ($365) with the Zoom EXH-6 Dual XLR ($70) add on for a total of 6 XLR inputs.

Are you recording to a computer? Live streaming? Skype guests? It all depends. Frankly the Zoom H6 is likely the simplest to just record six mics.

Maybe save your buddy a couple hundred bucks and tell him to just use the recorder and mics. with the H5 you have two channels right off the bat, and by spending another 70 bucks you can get two more. no need for the mixer. No need for the interface.

Oh! Then grab the EXH-6 for $70 [affiliate]. That will plug into the top of the H6 and give you two more XLR inputs. So then you could simply skip that broken input.

Yes, unless you can stay within two to three feet of the mic/recorder combination, as shown in the video I posted earlier.

Sadly, the SGH-6 shotgun mic capsule I linked you to in the earlier post has gone up from $99.20 to $129.99, but you can still get one renewed with a 90 day Amazon warranty for $116.

If that puts you over budget for the H5/SGH-6 combination, you can get the Zoom SGH-6 shotgun capsule combined with a Zoom F1 recorder instead for $229.99 new or $194.98 renewed.

Reviewed here with examples recorded with the F1-SP mounted both on top of the camera and on a boom.

And here is an example of what not to do - also recorded with the F1-SP (mic appears to be 4 feet away or more - a little too far from the subject, so there's a lot of noise).

This setup will give you great audio quality as long as your mic placement is good. It's not as clean as the H5, but it's more flexible than the Tascam DR-10SG because you can use different mics with it (e.g. lavs, professional XLR mics with an adapter capsule) [Referrals].

Again, hope this is helpful.

Get a used h6. Should be around $300 w/ shipping.

Get the H6 adaptor capsule. $70 new.

Get 6 wired lav mics. $25 each * 6 = $150.

Total= $520 + tax

That all said, spending $100 on an omni-directional USB condenser mic is not the worst idea, even though everyone else hates it. Look, if you're only publishing this so a couple of people can listen to it, what's really the return on the $600 investment? Is having perfect audio really going to increase your listenership? Is this for archival purposes, or for public purposes?
