Velcro, magnets, and snaps are all common. Chicago screws are an option, but less common.

Velcro us the most forgiving. You can adjust as needed after application, but over time it may lose its stick. This can be minimized by never taking off the plates

Magnets are a good choice and what I would choose to use personally, as it let's you take off the plates for cleaning/transport. Epoxy magnets to the plates and sew washers or similar into the vest.

Snaps are gonna give you a more solid attachment than either magnets or velcro, but at the cost of requiring absolute precision. If you screw up placement you either have to rivet a new hole in the vest or cut out the epoxy.

Chicago screws ( image here ) are epoxies post side to the plates and are paired with grommets in the vest to make the most secure mounting.

Not bad for a first go at it, kydex takes a little finessing but once you figure it all out it's pretty easy and fun to work with. I would recommend going another 50° up in the oven and rigging up a press, it can be as simple as a pillow folded in half with a board or big book that you can actually sit on for ten minutes. Should help the kydex form with sharper lines to whatever you're molding.

I've also found these screws look really good and you shouldn't have to cut them.

Good luck! I love seeing other guys DIYing.

Quickest/easiest/cheapest way might be to stop by your local hardware store and see if they have long enough screw post sets.

Never gotten an unbound textbook before!

Quick and dirty method- Cardboard cut to fit all the way across but just shorter than the top of the plastic band.

Classier version- plexiglass cut to fit all the way across and just below the top of the band. Sand all edges smooth. Carefully drill 3 holes (both ends and middle) through the band and plexi for stubby chicago posts. They are like double sided screws but are low profile and finished on both sides. Put a little dab of nail polish on the threads to act like thread sealant.

These are examples of chicago posts. As they are screws, you just need a couple of turns of thread to catch and hold so get ones that are slightly shorter than you need so you can tighten them down.
