I went for this bathroom scale just because it was cheaper than I expected for what it does. It gives me lots of cool data. I like data.

I'm going to say "body fat calipers". You can get one for under $20 bucks, take multiple readings yourself. If you do 5 skin-fold sites instead of 3, you'll get a more accurate number. There's a margin of error, but if you can take consistent readings, they will still give you much more useful information about trending changes than a scale can.

Withings. The most consistent and precise, and their app is great for tracking trends over time. It also shows your last five or so every time you weigh in.

this one except it's not pink for breast cancer awareness. I do not recommend it however because the reviews are true it seems to average out your weight. If you go digital, read a review to make sure it's accurate otherwise it can be shocking to see your weight go up 4-5 pounds for no reason.

I'm a fan of digital scales. Analog ones are so fiddly, because you have to make sure that it's perfectly zeroed, and that you're reading it from the proper angle, and that you're standing in the proper spot.... Too much effort.

The scale I currently use was the cheapest one at the store, but it's still quite functional--it's the Taylor 7023. But all it does is tell you your weight... as I'm starting to get more and more into lifting weights and putting on muscle, I'm thinking of upgrading to something which can tell me my percent body fat. My friend is a fan of this one; haven't done too much research on it personally, though.

As to how often I weigh myself.... This is a bit unusual, but I weigh myself not only every day, but multiple times every day, for basically the exact same reasons as everyone in this thread. I count my "official weight" for the day as the one I see the most consistently. It works for me! But at the same time, remember everyone is different--I have a friend who felt very discouraged when she weighed herself every day. So just do what works for you and what keeps you feeling motivated!

For the fat percentage, I use a tool like this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Measurement-Percentage-Measure-Measuring-Skinfold/dp/B07C39XY34
Then, Muscle % is a lie because I do the BodyMass*(1-fat), so I'm assuming Muscle = whatever is not fat, but it's a simplification that I'm comfortable working with.

some scales (both big fancy ones dietitians and gyms usually have and normal bathroom scales ) estimate it, but you can also use a body fat caliper , they have digital ones too

BMI can get confusing because it's only calculating your height against your weight. Your weight could be from bulk fat or bulk muscle and your BMI doesn't care. The better metric is your body fat percentage.

You can buy a caliper/tape and measure it that way, a digital monitor, or a new scale like you had before.

FWIW, I could guess that your body fat percentage, based on your photos, is around 17%.

I use this Withings scale - it sends both the weight and body composition measurements to my phone... I use the LoseIt App, and I know it's compatible with a lot of other apps as well. Also it looks really good and is way more accurate than my older glass digital scale that changes depending on where I step on it and at what temperature. Highly recommended.

You're not ugly, but You look chubby. You should order this body fat caliper off amazon for $14, and test your body fat %. Then you'll either know you're in the unhealthy range and need to lose weight, or you'll have a scientific way to tell him to STFU.

You need to get your eyebrows threaded, learn to do your makeup, and use a sulfate free shampoo & conditioner to get your hair friz under control.

Thanks for the reply. This is what I am using:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0081SPRVU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Not sure if it is accurate or not but it seems to get good reviews and I've been using it for a while. My bf% on it just hasn't really changed.

Also visually I have a skinnyfat belly so I don't think it's the case that I'm a lot lower and it's just saying a higher number.

I got a little plastic caliper for free with some supplements, but I think they only cost 3 or 4 bucks.

Did not know that muscles hold water when they are sore.
This is what I own. https://www.amazon.com/Taylor-Scales-5768-Pound-Measurements/dp/B0052KNUH8?ie=UTF8&ref_=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top

Looks like it's not that great.

However, I will say my scale seems to be very consistent. Im not 100% sure though, but I think it's consistent. It constantly reads the same percentages +/-0.5% when I maintained the same weight.

There are as many ways to lose weight as there are religions.

In my experience starting small and building your way up is a better way to make a lifestyle change (such as changing your diet from eating things which make you feel good to healthy foods) than just going cold turkey and relying on willpower to get you through it.

E.g. my story, I read The 4 Hour Body. I became determined for the first time in my life to lose weight. What did I do? I did what the author advised first. Make one simple change. Just change your breakfast. In my case I changed my breakfast to be slow carb compliant (no white carbs) and to have more protein.

Not only did this have physiological effects (blunting my insulin levels and reducing hunger pangs) but it also was easy to stick to, and I saw some tiny results in 2 weeks. From there I was motivated to change to the diet wholesale, to this day I stick with it unless I'm poor or going through a very stressful period.

So start small first, then incrementally change your behaviour. It's always advised to people who want to start running, for them to start taking a 5 minute walk. Before they know it they're walking for 30 minutes in a week, they buy running shoes in 2 weeks, and they're running in a month.

Additionally:

  • Take regular measurements. I suggest to measure bodyfat and diameter measurements instead of your weight. As fat is so light you'll barely see the difference on the scales. You can use callipers or a Bio-impedance device like this one. Use a tape measure like this one so your not dancing like a headless chicken. Measue your waist, around your biceps, around thighs. Add it up. Record it in a spreadsheet or a journal. Now notice that number come down after a while and use that to motivate you. What gets measured gets managed.

  • Get an accountability partner. Better yet raise the stakes so that not following your plan of diet will lead to financial loss or complete embarassment. They're groups online which all decide to lose weight or gain muscle and take horribly embarassing before photos. If they don't reach their goals, or not stick with the plan according to their partner, then those photos get posted to your facebook and twitter profiles. If that doesn't do it for you, promise to donate money to some evil organisation you detest, if your accountability partner sees you slide.

Good luck. Losing weight is a lifestyle change. And it's a lifestyle change you won't regret. Soon you'll be wondering how the heck you could enjoy that sweet snack everyday as opposed to just your cheat days.

I doubt your BMI is 29.9. I was 300lbs at 6'1" and the body fat calculator said my BMI was 33.

My doctor. He has a scale since he sells weight loss programs and food. It's terribly expensive to buy
