I spent ten years of my youth in boxing practice, so I've had my share of punching a bag.

Yes, you can get injured. I hurt my little finger, nothing serious but it was a constant nagging pain that took forever to heal. It's good to take precautions.

First : Use wraps. They protect your wrists, but more importantly they protect your fingers and small bones in your hands. Elastic or not, doesn't matter that much. I prefer non elastic, but you might have to iron them after laundry which is annoying. With elastic wraps you don't have to. There's also inner gloves you can use that serves the same purpose. Check [an instructional] (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=g6nn0iZwenA) on how to use wraps properly.

Use gloves. They protect your hands. Doesn't matter that much if it's gloves designed for the heavy bag or if they're for sparring. But I'd recommend getting a pair designed for the bag . They'll last a lot longer, and it's more fun using them because they aren't made to absorb the impact on the target the same way sparring gloves are. Your punches will feel and sound harder which is always a good feeling.

Then I'd like to discuss the bag itself: getting proper filling is quite difficult, and can often lead to the bag being filled at the bottom, but being looser at the top. This will have the effect that if you punch a straight punch at head height, you'll hit with your fingers instead of your knuckles, which is a recipe for injuries. Make sure you have a good enough quality bag, prefilled.

The technique isn't that important, just have fun while you're doing it. Just make sure you don't hit the bag with a bent wrist. Start out light, then go harder if it feels OK.
You can always find good tutorials on how to punch properly, but it's really not rocket science. I still remember my first class, the teacher did not instruct me how to throw a punch, he just told me to go "jab with your left, then cross with your right". I was a little confused because I had expected a few lessons of how to throw a jab and a cross. But you really don't need that to start punching, you can do that later on. Just start hammering the bag!
