Del the Funky Homosapien said it best back in 1998:

This is for you kids trying to get signed.

Just a little something you should keep in mind:

The labels are slave masters. Artists are slaves.

Don't get too raunchy. They want you to behave.

You get signed. You're thinking, "This is great!"

But wait You never knew what was at stake.

Creative control they withold.

You sell your soul when you sign on the dotted line hoping to go gold.

But you'll never see that, not without promotion.

The label'll just throw your shit out, and got it floatin'.

You think your shit is potent, but ain't nobody buying it.

If they ain't never heard of it, ain't nobody trying it.

If they ain't never heard of it 'your record' they murder it.

You can complain. But they are not concerned a bit.

'Cause when they signed you, they thought you'd make a hit

'cause of who you were affiliated with, and all that bullshit.

Frustrations. All these rules and regulations

Just so you can have your shit heard by the nation.

And be patient.

'Cause by the time they find a lead release, your shit is ancient.

You think they're working your album? You're mistaken.

And if you flop, you get dropped.

'Cause you ain't the star. You didn't go pop.

Just straight up hip-hop. Time to get a mop.

'Cause without no promotion, of course sales drop.

Peep the break down: If tapes cost ($)10,

You'll probaably only get to see a dollar in the end,

That you cannot spend. Cause your budget gets recouped.

So you never get cash unless your record is "Shoop."

You better hope you get shows, which will not happen

If you don't have a record that's the main attraction.

Even if you sell a million, you'll get burned

Cause they keep half your cash just in case of returns.

For a while, you wonder why rappers don't smile.

'cause to them, you're not an artist. You're just another file.

Another nigger used to make another buck.

They don't give a fuck. And if your shit don't blow up, tough.

But the star gets both promotion and devotion

From the whole fucking staff. At you, they laugh.

The star probably don't know that he the house nigger.

Thinking he bigger cause he's the, pick of the litter.

These labels think backwards. They push the acts that need it the least

So they can get all the money they can when it's released.

They take you to a restarant for a feast,

And then expect you to pck up the check?

That's why I give props to niggaz who is independent:

'Cause they make they own money, plus decide how to spend it.

Splendid.And lets end it.

And don't get offended.

Just listen to the Shaolin Soul albums, they're great and have lots of Wu-Tang samples.

What the hell, it doesn't seem to be available any more.

This is it, but it's out-of-stock.

I got it from CD Baby (years ago), but the website has since updated and the search field yielded no results. You can YouTube him and catch some (but not all) of his songs there.

This seems to be his official website, lots of great stories about him in the guestbook, but it might hit you in the feels: http://rogerridleybluesman.com/home.html

I'm sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe try contacting 'Playing For Change' to see if they can get you in-touch with his family to update the website or something.

Sorry I can't help you out more.

EDIT: man, now I'm watching his video and the part at 1:30 kills me, his little: "Thank you!" And smile to the wee child: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es3Vsfzdr14

God bless Roger.

You missed my 4 favorites. I saw these through Netflix's DVD mail rental setup. Last check, they were still available.

Look up "Tom Dowd & The Language of Music". He was the primary engineer and producer for Atlantic Records starting in the '50s, going from Charlie Parker, The Coasters, Cream, Ray Charles, Allman Bros, and so many more. He did the freakin' "Layla" sessions for crying out loud. http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2751332633
Plus, he was involved in "The Manhattan Project" (the bomb, not the band) as a nuclear physicist.

Also, along the same lines, "The Atlantic Records Story-The House That Ahmet Built"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0321315/?ref_=nv_sr_2

And, about another independent label that did OK, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", about The Funk Brothers, the main house band on all of the early Detroit based Motown tunes. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314725/?ref_=nv_sr_1

"Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story" is fascinating, with Booker T & the MG's as the house band, Otis Redding, Irma Thomas, and The Staple Singers as artists. It's about the rise and fall of an incredible group, in a moment in time. https://www.amazon.com/Respect-Yourself-Stax-Records-Story/dp/B000UD2K32

Hahaha

I just got reminded of the scene in Undercover Brother where NPH says, "I like Will Smith. He raps happy".

Just don't forget about Lost and Found where he tried to have his gangster album. OH GOD! Why do I know this information?

Some of the comments here are saying that it's a song called "Love Sick" by Amy Keys. That doesn't bring up much of anything when googling. She has an old album on Amazon and some videos with her singing on Youtube.. poking around I didn't hear anything with those particular lyrics. Does her voice sound like the singer from the song? It looks like she has worked on a lot of music for various shows/movies. She has a facebook page - perhaps you could contact her?

|name|Mother Funk Conspiracy|
|about artist|The Mother Funk Conspiracy is a force to be reckoned with. The high-energy grooves and intricate changes will keep everyone going, from the keen, jazz influenced listener, to the casual, good times dancing types. The band features some professional jazz musicians, basically playing groove music for the dancers, yet taking jazzy solos. No smooth jazz here folks, though some songs will find your eardrums in a very pleasant mood. ([more on last.fm](http://www.last.fm/music/Mother Funk Conspiracy))|
