[Alex]( http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_(parrot) was truly an incredible bird. There was a NOVA special a few years ago on him as well as lots of great stuff in the Wiki article. Seeing intelligence in other animals like this is humbling.
Some highlights of Alex's abilities:
Here is a 12 minute video from the NOVA special and how his death affected people (introduced by Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson). It must have been devastating for Dr. Pepperberg. As scientists we are not supposed to remain a little detached from our test animals, but an animal like Alex is something truly special. I am sure when that bond was broken it was very difficult for Dr. Pepperberg. Even all these years later, my heart goes out to her.
A short video highlighting some of Alex's understanding.
Here is a link to Dr. Pepperberg's website: The Alex Foundation. It is currently being updated, but I included it incase you want to bookmark it for later.
Alex & Me, Dr. Pepperberg's book on their work together.
Alex the Parrot: No Ordinary Bird, a children's book about Alex.

Edit - There's been some discussion on parrot ownership in here and I wanted to share PBS's "Parrot Confidential" (full episode). Many parrots are purchased then given up when the owners realize how much dedication, time, and patience it takes to keep one (let alone some parrots have a lifespan of 70+ years). This documentary is about parrot rescues and the current situation of the parrot trade. Once you get home (unless you can watch tv at work without anyone caring), I suggest checking it out. It's incredibly informative.
It's a reprint of a classic. Margaret Wise Brown has written many famous children's books. This one gets 5.0 / 5.0 at amazon:

There's a rather sweet children's book about Cher Ami.
Same! I had this book when I was younger called "Ducks Don't Get Wet". And nobody would believe me when I told them that ducks don't get wet.
This was one of my favorites growing up ---> https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HFS54C/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1
Our daughter is 3 years old, and we've read her Goodnight Opus since she was born. That one is probably the most universal, as it's really just about staying foolish/imaginative. Like I said, our favorite story.
Edwurd Fudwupper Fibbed Big is about siblings and is funnier - it's about the effects of lying and the value of a sibling relationship.
Mars Needs Moms is good for when your kid gets old enough to tell you she hates you. The kid remarks that he doesn't know what's so special about moms, then he finds out.
All three are beautiful, both in the writing and the visuals.
This isn't it, but sounds like it may be related to Sam and the Firefly; a kid's book in which a firefly is taken captive and his friend (an owl) saves him?
Not it, but thought it might jog your memory.

I think Poppy is amazing. That's the name of one of my favorite YA books starring one of my favorite literary heroines: a deer mouse who battles the despotic owl who killed her boyfriend. She wears an earring and carries a porcupine quill sword. In my opinion, a Poppy is spunky, smart, and fearless. Also, you have a great "how you got your name" story!
I gave my nephew a Dr. Suess birthday book from Amazon (there are two, only one is any good) and wrote an inscription. Apparently after the party, he asked my sister to read it to him 3 times.
Edit: this is the book Happy Birthday to You! https://www.amazon.com/dp/0394800761/
BIRDS ARE MY LIFE
SERIOUSLY
THIS IS MY FAVORITE PHOTO I'VE EVER TAKEN. IT MADE IT TO THE FRONT PAGE ON MY OTHER ACCOUNT. HER NAME IS NOELLE AND SHE IS A RESIDENT AT OUR WILDLIFE CLINIC.
THIS IS A BARRED OWL WITH A WONKY EYE WE TOOK CARE OF UNTIL HE WAS RELEASED.
THIS IS MY ROOSTER ALEJANDRO. HE IS A SEX GOD.
THIS IS THISTLE, SHE'S A RESIDENT AT THE CLINIC TOO. KESTRELS ARE MY FAVORITE BIRDS AHHHHHH
YOU KNOW WHAT? HERE IS AN ALBUM OF BIRDS I'VE WORKED WITH IN THE CLINIC. THIS IS TAKING TOO LONG.
Edit: Oh right, wishlist items. It's not under $5, but I collect Audubon bird plushies, here is my most recent interest. Lemme search on amazon for a little bit for something cheaper.
DOUBLE EDIT: I FOUND AN AUDUBON COLORING BOOK! PRIME! FOUR BUCKS!
The first book that comes to mind is:
"The Boy Who Drew Birds: A Story of John James Audubon"
Written by Jacqueline Davies, Illustrated by Melissa Sweet
Excellent story format autobiography of Audubon with beautiful illustrations. Great introduction to environmentalism as well.
Speaking of Audubon, any of the Audubon Society field guides are great to use with kids, even if they can't read the text. Ditto for the coffee table style books of his watercolors, such as "Audubon's Aviary: The Original Watercolors for The Birds of America" by Roberta Olson and The New York Historical Society. I worked at a summer camp that had a ahem fledgling bird watching program and the kids loved paging through the guides.
I'm a school librarian and all of our National Geographic Kids books, regardless of topic, are constantly checked out and on hold. They have a book about birding that looks pretty good. Birds of North America
For the little guys, I would recommend:
Charlie Harper's Count the Birds
Birds
If all else fails, you can use Angry Birds (in all its many current manifestations including the upcoming movie) as a gateway drug and angle in from there. :)

Who Really Killed Cock Robin
In 5th grade I put up such a fight over this that my parents were called in to meet with me and the principal and I made my (first year) teacher cry. After being forced to read it I was asked something along the lines of "aren't you glad you read it?" and I angrily went back to the other books I was reading that I had brought from home.

For the simple stories I like something with a bit of poetry to it. I like many of Margaret Wise Brown's books, like The Little Island, for instance. Birds is really quite lovely.
Another thing I like is a book with enough going on that I can breeze through the story in different ways, without feeling compelled to stick to the writing. How The Trollusk Got His Hat is a delightful (though out of print) example of this. I have to delve more into Mercer Mayer. I'm not that into the Little Critter books, but they kind of dominate his catalog. And why are so many out of print? Baffling.
