Well, you somehow missed a huge chunk of the Cultural Revolution.

Chinese Medicine in Early Communist China, 1945-1963 (Needham Research Institute Series)

From the text:

“Our nation’s health work teams are large. They have to concern themselves with over 500 million people [including the] young, old, and ill. … At present, doctors of Western medicine are few, and thus the broad masses of the people, and in particular the peasants, rely on Chinese medicine to treat illness. Therefore, we must strive for the complete unification of Chinese medicine.”

From the Chinese Medical Association in 1955:

“Our ancient medicine is … the subject of interest of the medical world in capitalist countries. Soviet experts once especially invited Professor Li Tao to lecture on the history of Chinese medicine, but a delegation of French medical representatives [also] invited the two old Chinese medical practitioners Shi Jinmo and Yuan Hechai to a discussion. These are all evidence of the emphasis which foreign nations place on Chinese medicine.”

If you’ve ever been to China you’ll recognize terms like “holism” (zhengtiguan) and “preventative care” (yufangxing) in marketing for alternative medicine. Both of these were introduced in Mao’s propaganda, along with many others.

In the case of your argument against the logic of regression in culture and science, do I really have to persuade you that societies can become worse over time? And Communist China of all places? There are records of anesthesia being used in surgery dating back to Hua Tuo (200AD), who was educated in acupuncture and yet spoke against it in favor of anesthesia for use in surgery. And yet, in 1971 after a New York Times journalist described his appendectomy in Peking, and mentioned the use of acupuncture for post-operative comfort, the Chinese Communists engaged in a worldwide media firestorm describing Chinese acupuncture as an effective anesthetic, complete with fake surgical records and testimonies.

tldr; “traditional Chinese medicine” as you know it, originated in the Cultural Revolution. Chinese physicians have known these practices are garbage for literally millennia.

Most people and schools would probably recommend you start with Ted Kaptchuk's The web that has no weaver. Instead I prefer to breakdown my recommendation depending on whom is asking, and why. For patients who want to learn more about CM for diy health purposes, I recommend Legget's book which is 40% TCM theory explanation, and 60% application of those theories to everyday diet. For potential students, I recommend this translation of a first-year textbook for CM students in China, by the excellent Nigel Wiseman. For those interested in the more esoteric theoreticals of CM, I recommend anything by Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee.

And, for anyone really interested in reading "oldest and most enduring book" in Chinese Medicine - which should be every student and practitioner of CM - I would suggest a good translation of the Huangdi neijing. Note my emphasis on a good translation, which sadly excludes the Veith and Ni editions, both of which are quite terrible. If you can get past the dubious biomedical equivalencies he likes to make,Y.C. Kong's translation is composed of important textual excerpts neatly arranged by topic, making it both cheaper and more beginner-friendly than the Unschuld translation.

Zhan Zhuang might be the best option for you. Check out The Way of Energy by Master Lam Kam Chuen. It's a simple and detailed book on Zhan Zhuang and how to start training by yourself. Remember to follow the book instruction precisely to get any result. I think the book fits your criteria of postures, feelings, visualizations, and explanations.

It's only $13 on amazon. If you want the over $25 free shipping, buy it with his other book Chi Kung: Way of Power, which teaches you how to apply power.

Good luck.

I have trouble staying pregnant. I always assumed my alcoholism played a part.
One of the things that really helped me was this book:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0316159212/ref=asc_df_03161592123422311?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&tag=pg-1583-86-20&linkCode=df0&creative=395097&creativeASIN=0316159212

It helped me figure out what was wrong with me hormonally and how to resolve that. I went on to have two healthy children. Good luck!

You mentioned fine motor skills so I just want to say that unfortunately the only thing that will help your central nervous system recover is rest.

If you are concerned about bruises and lumps get some Dit Da Jow. If your Sifu is actually a Sifu he should make it. A true Sifu should have some knowledge of healing and first aid so I would ask him this question first.

*You might be interested in this book. I absolutely love it and it will probably say the opposite of what most people will tell you about RICE.
