It is! I originally got it for my soju but it’s half an inch too short to fit, so I just fit one bottle and the rest tiny skincare and some masks later on. The shipping to return is like 1/2 the price I paid so I thought might as well just keep it 😅

edit: if anyone’s interested, it’s technically a 6 can beer cooler but heres the amazon link.

They also make little 12v coolers perfect for a couple cans of soda and a homemade sandwich.

I'm a Texas native, now living elsewhere, but I remember those hot summers. A cooler full of ice in a hot cab can turn to water pretty quickly and gel packs barely do better.

I actually just finished going through all of this.

  1. I would recommend going solar. Powering your house batteries from your alternator works, but it puts extra stress on your alternator which means you'll have more repair bills down the road.

1b) I have 2 vent fans installed in my roof, and it does wonders on a hot night. Set one to blow in, and the other to blow out, and you'll get some great airflow. Humidity is another story though. Even with the two fans humidity can be rough, but at least its something.

  2. As for battery usage for the fans, the ones I linked you to use about 60w, so you are going to want to make sure to buy enough deep cycle batteries to last you however long you sleep. Two 60w fans running for 8 hours is going to be about 960w. I have 4 35 amp-hour deep cycle solar batteries, which give me a total of 1620 watts to play with, so I can run my fans all night, and still have 660w left over to play with in the morning. BUT, seeing as you are looking to also have a fridge, that is going to mean more batteries depending on the kind of fridge you are thinking of using. A fridge like THIS would only use about as much as your vent fans, and would save you money on batteries. Here is a calculator that helped me out when I was trying to figure out my battery bank.

  3. Charging your house batteries off of your alternator only takes about 15 minutes or less for a full charge. Solar might take a few hours, but its less stress on your van in general.

If you are worried about solar being too expensive, it really isnt. You can get a full 100 watt solar panel kit for $118. That give you all the wiring, a panel, and a charge controller all at once. Then all you need are batteries, which you can get a set of 4 for $250. You don't need those specifically, but just make sure whatever batteries you get, you make sure they are DEEP CYCLE batteries, and not starter batteries.

Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, and I'll be glad to help. Anything to help another vandweller so they don't have to go through all the hell I did trying to figure it all out myself. lol

I’m trying to decide on a skincare fridge because I wanna be even more extra. I ordered the Frigidaire one on sale from Walmart but my order got delayed indefinitely, so I cancelled. Now I can’t decide what kind to get! Any suggestions? I’ve been looking at the Cooluli ones on Amazon (the cow print one and this massive one with temperature controls), the Facetory one (which is also offered free with a lux subscription that I totally don’t need), and the Frigidaire one.

I don't know what your definition of cheap is but this one is sub 100$ on Amazon

How does it work on propane. Does it keep food cold? How much propane does it use?

This is the one I'm looking at now. I could use it as an electric min-fridge most of the time and use the propane during outages. But I don't need an electric mini-fridge most of the time. And for the cost, I could get an entirely electric mini-fridge and small generator and use the generator to power other things besides. But then there is the issue of storing gas vs propane tanks. So...I don't know.

From a theoretical point of view only (as in, I haven't bought a van yet to say nothing of a van fridge) I'd get a chest-type fridge. One that opens from the top, and goods go into it. In fact my plan for most of my storage is to use that principle as much as I can. Doors can open and stuff can fly out, but a chest with a lid, not so much.

Also, since I'll be mounting the fridge low, I'd rather it open up so you can look down into it, instead of getting down on hands and knees to peer sideways into it. A chest type should also be better at not wasting energy when you open it - cold air falls. If you open a side-opening fridge, all the cold air falls to the floor and then the fridge has to spend energy on cooling. A chest type model won't have that problem.

My thoughts on it only, mind you. Dometic has some great portable coolers that only draw quite a minimal amount of power. They also have slide-out kits if you don't want to DIY - put them in a cabinet, and pull them out to get into them. There may be other brands, but I stumbled over this model and it was love at first sight.

I'm thinking the largest dual-zone model for my build, but the 61 liter model would no doubt work great also. If you don't need to be able to split them (these can do cooler/freezer 50/50, or cooler/cooler) the single compartment models are no doubt cheaper. The 85 liter model is huge, so I may have to rethink and get the 61. Time will tell.

These draw tiny amounts of power, comparatively speaking. If you have a 100+ watt solar system and some deep cycle batteries (preferably Lithium) it should run forever off the solar.

I've had fantastic performance from a "Willz" brand mini fridge I bought from costco for $99. Separate freezer works perfectly and stores a reasonable amount. Amazon link for the model:

These are the goods and services listed in the song:

  • house
  • furniture for your house
  • K-car
  • your love
  • build a tree fort
  • little tiny refrigerator with food in the tree fort
  • fake fur coat
  • exotic pet (llama, emu)
  • John Merrick's remains
  • limousine to the store
  • eat more kraft dinner with really expensive ketchup
  • fake green dress
  • art (picasso or garfunkel)
  • monkey

So let's go through them one by one. Also, all numbers will be converted to Canadian Dollars, because that's the currency relevant here. We'll ignore the part about buying love, and assume that their love will be bought somewhere along the way because what.

    House

Let's assume the house is in the GTA. The cheapest average house price in the GTA presently is around $600k, whereas the average in total is about $800k.

    Furniture for the House

We'll assume for the sake of argument that this is a complete furnishing of the house, and not simply a few items, such at the two examples given in the song. This can be enormously variable. Some people furnish an entire house for a few grand, and other's spend a hundred grand on a single room. Let's go conservative on this and use this source as our basis, however, using the exchange rate at the time it was posted, and we'll round this up a few percent to get a round $30k.

    K-car

A quick search suggests this is a direct reference to the Plymouth Reliant, which makes sense given the lyrics. Assuming we just want a standard new car, we'll just take the average price and convert it to Canadian to get about $40k.

    Build a Tree Fort

Treehouses can costs anywhere from a few hundred in materials to a few hundred thousand if you're paying other people to make a nice one. Since this is specified as home-made, we can go for a lower figure range that still allows for an impressive tree FORT, like $10k to $25k.

    Stocked Mini-Fridge for Tree Fort

This one was easy, rounding up to $400 to fill with food.

    Fake Fur Coat

Vary enormously from very cheap to absurdly expensive. We'll take a middle price of $500.

    Exotic Pet (Llama, Emu)

These pets are actually pretty cheap to purchase. Based on quick searches $50 to $300

    John Merrick's Remains

I have no idea, couldn't find good info. A skull replica went for around $200 though, so I'm just going to pull $10k out of my ass, considering you'd have to get this custom done.

    Take Limousines to the Store

Depends heavily on what kind of limo you want, and how often you go to the store. Let's assume twice a week, and the cheapest option listed here for what most people think of as a limousine. at $255 for 3 hour minimum. $255/trip x 52 weeks x 2 trips/week = $26.5k per year. We'll assume only one year, but this would recur.

Eat more Kraft Dinner with Expensive Ketchups

Even with next-level ketchup this is negligible, since it would replace other foods. Going to give this one a $0.

    Fake Green Dress

    Dresses can cost from <$100 to >$10000. Let's bullshit a mid(ish)-range $500

    Art (Picasso, or Garfunkel)

Garfunkel is a musician, so you can't really buy his art and hang it on your walls. Well, you could, but that would be weird. Let's assume we're not talking like a poster of a Picasso, but a legitimate original Picasso. These can range from thousands to well over a hundred million. Since the song only specifies one piece of art, we'll just use that and pick an inexpensive $10k. Obviously this can go much much higher.

    Monkey

Varies, obviously, but a mid range price seems to be around $5k. If you want a more iconic Chimpanzee, apparently that can cost around $75k.

    TOTAL: $732,950 - $1,018,200
