It has a few names tbh: glitter dust, pearl lustre dust, edible lustre... you can find it in baking supply shops---it's used to paint fondant petals and give them a nice glittery sheen. It does the same thing for sweet/alcoholic drinks. It looks like this

I used this recipe for both the cookies and the icing. Found a puzzle piece cookie cutter because I am not fancy enough to make a custom one.

For the gold color, I used petal luster dust which is an edible food coloring. You could use any brand, but if you want the exact same one I tried this one. I tried to mix the gold in with the icing, but it wasn't quite as vibrant so I also added a few drops of yellow food coloring. After the icing dried, I brushed some of the gold powder over the surface for some extra shine. I wish I had tried mixing some directly into the cookie dough before baking to see the color!

Rock on. /u/Wild_bill89 got back to me and linked me to the exact product, but what you linked me to is very similar. Thank you!

This is what I use for my baking. I have used it on three cakes and 36 cookies so far and still have half left over - a little goes a very long way, so you can use it for other things.

But it鈥檚 just a suggestion. (: Either way, the Jiggy idea is awesome!

I use Rolkem Super Gold and mix it with either vanilla or lemon extract to make a painty-paste type stuff. The key is to mix it with alcohol (extracts are alcohol based) but I think vodka or everclear might even work better, as soon as I take a trip to the liquor store that鈥檒l be my first choice, but for now, extracts are what I have on hand lol. The alcohol evaporates quickly leaving the shine without melting your icing.

So, I got home, and decided to come up with something.

All in, a set of golden donkey nuts wouldn't be terribly pricey.

Even a good cocobolo rub stick is helpful. But really, Tylose/CMC is amazing. It sets up harder and glossier than gum tragacanth. To whatever extent that there are any tricks or secrets I've figured out, this is my greatest.

u/Kookalka 路 1 pointr/Baking

Add a little bit of CMC powder into the fondant. It helps it harden faster. I like this one from Amazon. I鈥檓 not sure what your options are after you鈥檝e already shaped the flowers besides just more time and/or using them without fully drying. Good luck!

Pure gold is not bad for you (nor good.. it just passes through) and a very small quantity is used (in very small thin pieces to appear as a larger quantity, and because you don't actually want to chew though metal..)

It's also tasteless.. it's just there to make your food look nice and shiny and expensive (http://www.amazon.com/Edible-Gold-Leaf-Dust-23k/dp/B00439K1IU/ref=sr_1_4?s=grocery&ie=UTF8&qid=1404442297&sr=1-4&keywords=edible+gold 1 gram for just 200 bucks..)

Because if you go looking for edible gold dust, this is what you find:

http://www.amazon.com/Oasis-supply-Lustre-Egyptian-Super/dp/B0000VLH8S

http://www.amazon.com/Aztec-Luster-grams-Decorating-DP-05/dp/B00PR4BQ8Y

http://www.amazon.com/Pharaohs-Luster-grams-Decorating-DP-03/dp/B015RW117G

Now if you have any doubt that those are not made of actual elemental gold, look at the price. $6-$8 for 2 grams. Even if you were talking 10k gold, at today's market price, that would be $30 for 2 grams, except that's at ounce rates, and then the cost of milling, manufacturing, packaging, and upsell for profit, would bring it to about $60-$100 for 2 grams of just 10 karat gold.

So why would anybody use real gold dust, when they can just as easily get away with using something that's 1/10th the price, because nobody could possibly tell the difference in the amounts used?

> gold glitter $15 for 4g at a LHBS

They ripped your off. You can easily get that for half the amount at a bake shop or Amazon

u/spockspeare 路 1 pointr/todayilearned

Not really. Basically gluing it together and then gluing some glitter onto it. Doesn't take exotic materials, either. E6000 and any imitation gold powder. But if you're fancy, you can always use real gold.

u/dipforthischip 路 1 pointr/Baking

It鈥檚 from amazon - gold luster powder
