Not being a downer but I probably would stay away from cotton. It's a horrible choice for hiking. Once it gets wet it won't dry for awhile and loses all ability to hold heat.

You would be better off with a material that is at least water resistant.

This is what I use. It's pretty pricey but it sheds water pretty easily. Not only that but it's built more like a harness in case I have to lift him up for some reason(most likely in water). It being a vibrant color is another plus side.

Those used to be half as expensive. Keep in mind, the wider the pack is on your dog, the larger the bruise will be on the back of your legs as your dog attempts to run past you on the trail. Longer/less deep is better. Here's one on Amazon for $25.

Have a beagle also that likes to go with me hiking, do you remember what size pack you purchased? I tried small and a medium Kyjen packs (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0081XIFZK/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1). The small, the pack was perfect but the harness was way too small, tried the medium and the pack was way too big and the harness was just right.. I was even debating on keeping both, and using the medium harness with the small pack but the velcro/ straps didn't line up so I returned.

https://www.amazon.com/Cesar-Millan-Dog-Backpack-Medium/dp/B00ISAU0FO - I can't speak for that one specifically, but there are lots of dog backpacks out there! As far as how it would go, that depends a lot on the dog. Mine is a fussy princess and didn't like it.

This is the pack she has (size medium). TBH, if I see her pooping way off the trail, I leave it because she's on a completely raw diet and her poop is very small, turns chalky and breaks down to almost nothing in 2 days. I see it as if a coyote pooped off trail. If it's near where people walk, I pick it up. I see a lot of poop on the trail from owners who left it there and not the kind that breaks down easily, so I don't want to be one of "those owners".

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0081XIEGU/ref=oh_details_o03_s02_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 There's the pack in size large. He's probably part pit, weighs about 55 with a big chest, just barely fits, if he were a little smaller it would be too big (probably going to shorten the front straps a bit, cinched down all the way.) The weight in the pack rides him great though and he has full mobility, just had to get used to the wide load at first, hehe. The backpack part is velcro and you just pull it off for break time or what have you, leaving the harness portion on him.
