I use this with a regular harness.

Our dogs do great with a soft bed covering the floor, if we have a drive we are particularly worried for them for (occasional off road to a trail they can walk on) we put them in a harness and have a 2 point leash that attaches to a hook on the floor.

The two point leashes are made for walking two dogs but they work just fine for attaching as a “seatbelt” for them. We got these on Amazon.

Im sure you already read all about them but Gentle Leaders are fantastic for leash training a dog. They don't act like a muzzle so the dog can still eat, drink, bark, ect while wearing them but they provide just enough pressure on the muzzle when they pull that the dog quickly learns not to pull while on a leash.

I adopted both of my dogs at the ages of 1 and 2, so they were full grown and already strong as hell (boxer/bullmastiff mixes are super strong for their size), and the gentle leader was a key tool I used to help them learn leash manners.

They hated them at first and spent the first 5 minutes trying to paw it off their muzzle but they quickly got used to wearing it and after 2 weeks completely stopped pulling while they were on a leash.

I no longer use the gentle leader and instead use this harness with the leash attached to both the harness and their collar. But I also keep 2 gentle leaders in our "emergency kit" along with an extra tandem leach attachment. The emergency kit is a kit I have put together in case something crazy like a fire or tornado happens and I need to be able to control them both at the same time when things are going crazy around us. It also includes extra meds for the one dog on a daily medication as well as enough food for 3 days.

I was in your exact position. I used this to stop the pulling (or at least make it manageable) and this as a safety precaution for broken leashes, where you attach 1 end to their regular collar and the other end to the gentle leader harness (make the end attaching to the regular collar longer than the other so it only gets pulled on if the other attachment fails) and there ya go. An anti-pull harness with a fail safe!. (Also make sure not to cheap out on your primary leash)

Ahh.. you need one with a swivel on it! Mine pretty much can't tangle. I'll find a link to it and post later.

Edited to add: this is like mine, the clips at the ends swivel, so tgey don't tangle. Works well! I love using leash couplers! I have one that gives 2 feet of space to each dog (4 feet total) and one that gives 1 foot to each dog. I use the 1 foot leash coupler for the unfortunate circumstances where I have to walk both dogs together in public, otherwise I like the one that gives each dog 2 feet of space. I don't use them all the time, only when the dogs really need a walk and my SO is really busy. They make taking the two of them for a walk by myself possible.

I ALWAYS use a harness with these, as one dog has a tendency to jerk the other. I hook the coupler to the ring on the part of the harness on the dog's back, not in the front. They can get into tangles where they choke each other if you hook into the front, like with a sensation harness.

I have 2 large dogs, both husky mixes, and they both have very different ideas of where we should be going. One likes to stop and sniff EVERYTHING and the other just wants to run run run. Coupling them together balances them enough that I am able to walk them both at the same time. With 2 leashes, I feel like my arms are being torn off between the two of them, but when they're coupled the sniffer acts like an anchor to keep the runner from taking off, and the runner keeps the sniffer from spending too much time on any one scent. It's perfect, really. The only time I have a problem is in the rare circumstance where they both want to chase the same thing, but that usually doesn't happen. I have a leash that has a "traffic" handle which works really great, I can let them wander or hold them close and they both still have enough space with the 2 foot coupler. Also, the 2 foot coupler allows them to walk single file comfortably. I really only walk them on trails, so in narrow parts this is really useful.

I have couplers that have swivels on each of the clasps that hook to the dogs, so even if the dogs switch positions and run around each other, no tangles!

Another beautiful thing about the couplers, I think they have really helped my dogs bond. They're forced to walk close to each other, which makes them comfortable sniffing the same things and just generally being in the other's space.

I bought both couplers on Amazon, if you want the links I can dig them up!

Edit: amazon links. The picture is extremely deceiving on the flamingo pink 2 foot (on each side) coupler. Don't go by that. This brand also makes them in a few different colors if you dig around. I wanted bright colors so I would be able to tell the difference between the dog leash and the coupler.

I haven't seen people talk about this much, but one of the things I love in order to handle a reaction is having a leash that has a trafffic loop on it (I think that's the right word). I have this leash and when I can see he's going to react, I hold on to the closest loop, stand calmly and wait him out. Since he's in a harness and I have a hold on him, I can even manage a wave and a "sorry, he gets really stressed out!" to a person looking at me. Reggie is 85 pounds and likes to lunge, so I am serious that it's life changing. I know it's not ideal for training to have any reactions, but if you're stressed, adding these management tools will help.

I use a y coupler (similar to this) attached to a waist leash and that works well for us.

There are bike attachments that go lower on the bike, the best example I could find was this:

http://smile.amazon.com/SunLite-Bicycle-Dog-Leash-Sunlite/dp/B0006514IG/ref=sr_1_12?ie=UTF8&qid=1427123948&sr=8-12&keywords=bike+attachment+dog

Which I have no experience with but it seems like you could put one on each side? (and obviously don't attach it to their collars...) I am considering getting one for Wallaby so I'll let you know if I find anything better.

My bike was stolen last summer with the walkydog attached so I need a new attachment. I liked the walkydog but Wallaby wasn't 100% comfortable being that close to the bike.

Edit- after reading some of those reviews I wouldn't get is, seems difficult to install and one reviewer said their dog ripped the wheel right off the axle.

I am liking this more: http://smile.amazon.com/Signstek-Bicycle-Exerciser-Training-Leash----Walking/dp/B00QX0DM7O/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&qid=1427124225&sr=8-23&keywords=bike+attachment+dog

It lets the dog be farther away from the bike but has some stretch in the leash for shock absorption. Wallaby used to pull like crazy on the Walkydog but when I attached his leash to it, he wouldn't pull at all. That lead looks long enough that you could use it with your cockers.

This is just a side note, not about your business, but if you are going to offer walks, definitely require owners to have both secure collars and harnesses, maybe something like this hooked into both.

Two different dogs last summer were lost in my neighborhood alone while their owners were on vacation, both being cared for by official pet sitters from different companies. Both dogs had managed to slip their collars while on walks. It was a big deal, and those petsitters were pretty much blacklisted after that.

I have a client who uses https://www.lupinepet.com products because they have a pretty easy guarantee (nearly no questions asked repalcements!). They have leash couplers too that are decent priced. About to get a set here in the near future.

But her dog chewed through his harness (Silly bumper!) and they honest to god replaced it. All it took was a picture of the destroyed harness and she had to toss it and they mailed her a new one.

Couplers are a godsend. You clip the leash to the center ring and the ten the end of each side of the coupler to the leash and you can walk two dogs on one leash.

I use this hands free as part of my current set up. It has d-rings on either side. So the bungee leash that comes with it, is clipped to one side. Then I have this one that I Will take the extender, clip the two extender together then clip to the other side of my belt if I want like, a really hands free or if it's a big dog so that I have better center of gravity.

Or I just use that second leash like normal if I just need one hand. They've been good to me. Held up for a few years thus far. The belt one JUST broke, the plastic part. So I need to re-order that or find a new buckle and take it to a tailor and get them to heavy duty sew a new buckle on. Buckle was my fault, I closed it in a car door.

But the Lupine extenders I'm looking at and a new leash just because I've seen how easy the guarantee is and that they stand by it. Sort of a buy it for life product.

Yup. I have one of these and my dog loves it. I did have to work her up to longer distances though- running that far was initially hard on her pads.

By coupler I mean a ring with two straps with connectors, so that the leash attaches to the ring, and each of the two connectors connects to a harness ring (eg back connection, chest connection).

I mean something like this - but Amazon has a tons of competing ones that look similar. So I was hoping someone might be able to recommend a specific brand.

What kinda harness you got for two?

I have this leash for two that I really like.

But I have these harnesses, they are just ok. Think I might like those more.

I love my leash, but it was pricey. It has buckle on the handle that I use for quickly attaching them to things. It also adjusts from about 4'-6'. Then the coupler adjusts too, so one dog has more slack. Which is nice because my good old dog doesn't get dragged around by the rambunctious puppy so much.

It's a fantastic setup for when we're casually walking. We seldom get tangled up. Definitely don't skimp on individual leash training for the new pup though.

There's also this leash. Which is $10 cheaper and lacks a padded handle and doesn't adjust in the front.

Here's an album I created of some of the harnesses we use and like. Cora is the fawn merle and she is around 108 lbs. River is the harlequin and she is around 120 lbs, about 37" around the deepest part of her chest and 32" from base of neck to base of tail.

The basic harness that is black with a hot pink accent is a Balance Harness by Blue-9 in size large. It is very adjustable and has two points of connection, one at the rear and one at the front. You can use it with a euro leash such as this one, so there will always be equal pressure on each leash attachment.

The pink and orange harnesses are the Front-Range harness by Ruffwear and both are in size L/XL. Like the Balance harness, it also has two leash connection points. In some of the pictures of River in her Front Range harness, you'll see there's a short traffic lead attached to a head collar and clipped to the front leash attachment with a carabiner. River struggles with leash manners when we're passing other hikers/dogs, so this set up gives me control when I need it and keeps the handle in place.

The red harness is the Web master harness in size L/XL, also from Ruffwear. I'm currently using it as a mobility harness for my German Shepherd, so I didn't cinch all the straps properly on River. There is only one leash attachment in the back, no front attachment. There is a handle that is great for helping your dog over obstacles, which is why it makes a great mobility or hiking harness. The Web master is probably most similar to the feel of a backpack for your dogs, so it may be a good stepping stone if you think they'd need it. I would say it's a very good option for hiking, provided your dogs already have basic leash manners.

Good luck with that. Puppies are difficult. But they aren't puppies forever :).

If your wife doesn't like keeping him crated then she can keep him tethered to her. That way he is always in sight.

If they still have those dogs with them, tell them to use halters for walking the dogs.

I recommend this with a connector between the ring and their collar in case it breaks. It makes even large energetic dogs much more controllable. Also don't use a retractable leash - you can even get some with bungee shock absorbers built in.

u/TheCremeBrulee · 1 pointr/Dogtraining

You can also use a coupler (like this https://www.amazon.com/Guardian-Gear-Coupler-Nickel-Plated-Swivel/dp/B000Y908UO/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=collar+coupler&qid=1558379600&s=gateway&sr=8-3 ) that connects the front clip harness a gentle leader if he really is pulling that much.

I know you didn't ask for advice on this but if he's scared of the loud noises to the point where he is trying to run off and not taking treats, he's really stressed/scared. Can you find a different route to take him to the campus that's quieter or drive to the campus?
