Firsst of all, that's not a great price. A Sawtooth Les Paul is only $250 at Walmart, and that would come with the benefit of your being able to take it back and exchange it if there's something wrong with it. On Amazon you can get the Sawtooth Heritage with extra strings, pick, soft case, cord, strap, electronic tuner and guitar stand for $305. So that $225 price isn't very good.

These guitars have a maple cap (top of the guitar) and that's good. Also, they have alnico V pickups, and that's also good.

Because of modern hi-tech machinery, there are some pretty decent cheap guitars coming out of China and Asia these days. The one you're looking at is guaranteed to be one of the cheapest that are sold in the USA. You might be better off getting an Epiphone, which would be one significant step closer to a real Gibson Les Paul. Amazon has a Les Paul Special bundle for $249 that includes a 10 watt amp!

Here's a YouTube video about that set up:

I think that's not only a better value than the one at the pawn shop, I can just about guarantee that the Epiphone guitar is a much better instrument than the Sawtooth.

Good luck, friend! I hope this helped.

Yeah, you might get tired of it. So what?

Ask for something cheap for christmas and promise to give it a solid 6 months before giving up.

Better than online would be a local store and get them to include a good basic setup, just to make sure the guitar is actually playable when you receive it. Good luck!

Oh, and I started much the same way I describe; family had a clunky acoustic for years and eventually wanted to up the ante, mom got me a cheapie elec/amp and the rest is history!

u/ifmacdo · 3 pointsr/guitars

This guy. Picked it up used for $20. As expected, it needed a fair bit of setup. I have one high fret, but I'm taking a file to that later and crowning it today

It's a kinda crappy beginner's guitar cause I don't know how to play it

u/KaNikki · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Would this be suitable for a 16 year old with no musical background? If so, would there be anything else I should include with it? I hate getting someone a gift and them having to get other components.

u/yayaja67 · 2 pointsr/BassGuitar

This was my first bass: https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Guitar-Starter-Beginner-Package/dp/B003GWQJUE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496162154&sr=8-1&keywords=davison+bass+guitar

They don't come much cheaper than this, and it was actually pretty decent. I got a good year out of it before I out grew it and upgraded to a Squier. I still use the amp it came with.

u/torREDDITOR · 2 pointsr/Guitar

you seem like you know what you are talking about would this be a good starter guitar kit?

u/troll_is_obvious · 2 pointsr/Guitar

3/4 size is not mandatory for a child. There are tons of videos on youtube of 5 year old Asian kids shredding on full size guitars.

You can get an Epiphone SG for a couple hundred bucks. The cheaper models have the bolt-on necks, which are fine, if you're budgeting. But don't get the cheapest ones that come with a "fixed bridge" that can't be adjusted for intonation. You want the "tune-o-matic" bridge.

If you really want to be dad of the year, get him a Gibson SG Standard. Or maybe make that the upgrade if he sticks with lessons on the Epiphone.

u/AlanBeforeTime · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I always wanted instruments as a kid. I was fascinated that people made their own original music. The two that I wanted the most was a guitar and a bass. I own 2 guitars, a ukulele, and a guitlele.

Link to the one on my WL

Fun facts:

One of my uncles is in a band in Mexico. He plays the saxophone and the trumpet.

My paternal grandfather, that lives in Mexico, taught himself how to play guitar.

I was named after a singer in a Mexican band.

But all the cool kids have one!

Also, suggestions on a starter bass? I found this starter kit that has really good reviews, but I am open to other options!

Also found this one, what do you think is better?

u/ZachOps · 2 pointsr/Guitar

Im sure that is more then good enough, My uncle bought me this one for a start.

u/thepensivepoet · 2 pointsr/Guitar

Strat Pack

You can find similar packages from the other big name guitar manufacturers.

You'll also still have budget for a few pedals if you wanted to jump right into that.

u/original_pastafarian · 2 pointsr/casualiama

because of the electronics, it was actually more expensive than if I was buying a cheap electric guitar

u/Tebeku · 2 pointsr/CasualConversation

You should be able to find this kind of deal at your local retailer. It's a shit instrument that wouldn't be used professionally, but it's a fine toy.

Singing is my greatest strength actually. I have a very naturally almost operatic voice, very proud of it.

do you think this guitar is good enough quality? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00479EI76?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title the amp is the one that came with it

u/XiXLLAMAXiX · 1 pointr/rocksmith

Linking the guitar I used with rocksmith for about a year. Currently $100 for the guitar, a small amp, and travel bag. +$10 for the soldering iron I had to get to repair it when I managed to step on the cable... decent enough for if you want to get something cheap to start off with.

Since electric guitar requires a few things more than just a guitar, starter packs go a long way to give you the basic setup to have everything yoy need.

I started with a Squire by Fender starter pack and could not have been happier. Look for a Squire Affinity Strat starter pack, since the guitar is built in Indonesia and quality control is very good and you can find several pickup setups to choose.

The starter packs usually comes with:

  • the guitar
  • a 15 watt Fender Frontman amp (bigger than most other starter packs offer)
  • padded gigbag
  • guitar strap
  • 3 medium-sized picks
  • chromatic tuner
  • tremolo pedal
  • ziplock bag with tools and spare parts
  • a Fender DVD with 30 beginners lessons

Anyway, it's all you could possibly need. I've seen Epiphone also has a starter pack with a sweet Les Paul Apettite for Desrruction guitar, a replica from Guns and Roses's Slash's guitar.

You can always buy just the guitar and all those other things by your own, but you'll need them from day one and they can be pretty expensive if bought separately.

    My exact Squire guitar...

Epiphone Slash's AFD guitar starter pack...

Give it some thought. I've got several guitars now but still love my Squire Strat and use it often. Most of the other things, I still use daily.

Oh! And don't buy knock-offs of famous guitars, they usually suck balls. Squire and Epihone are built by Fender and Gibson respectively, so they build original licenced replicas, which is so much better.

Hey guys, I'm new to guitars and reddit in general, so please be patient with me if that's all right. I just started playing guitar for the first time. I know almost nothing about it and have some minor musical knowledge (played clarinet for a year or two.) I ordered my electric guitar from Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B002RXXOX8/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1496877024&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=electric+guitar&dpPl=1&dpID=41ZEJsVcjkL&ref=plSrch , as seen here. When I first got it, it played perfectly and seemed to be completely all right, but when I tried tuning it for the first time, one of the strings became "loose" and way more movable than the others. It doesn't produce any good notes and sounds awfully sour. Here are some pictures to show what happened.

So, what exactly happened to the string? If it's broken or needs to be adjusted, how can I fix it? Is the guitar playable like this? Thanks in advance.

I'm currently using this Davison bass guitar.
https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Guitar-Starter-Beginner-Package/dp/B003GWQJUE
And it just feels cheap.
Also my budget is around $150 but I'm slowly saving so I mean I can get more.

u/madshm3411 · 1 pointr/Guitar

I started with this guitar about 15 years ago, and I still have it today. Squire makes some excellent guitars for the price.

The pack comes with a shitty amp, but you'll pay the same price for the pack on Amazon as you will for the guitar itself, so it at least gets you started. Once you start to get good and decide you like playing guitar, you can upgrade the amp and it will drastically improve the sound of the guitar.

Like anything with guitar, it's just a suggestion - everyone is different - but I'd say you can't go wrong with that starter pack.

u/mildlynegative · 1 pointr/Bass

I actually have the this silvertone bass except mine was a different color and didn't have the thumb rest.

http://www.amazon.com/Silvertone-Guitar-Package-Liquid-Black/dp/B0002D0HZ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1404965263&sr=8-1&keywords=silvertone+bass

I give the bass a 3/5 and the amp 1.5/5.

The bass is okay, what you would expect from a starter kit. It has all of the necessary components. It's a bit hard to play as the string tension is ungodly in comparison to a good bass, but that's my only major complaint.

Maybe it is just my amp, but I give it 1 because it atleast works. The .5 is because it works alright with a pair of headphones plugged into it. The equalizer can only be set in one place that I have to tweak every time I use it or it makes this horrible buzzing sound.

Conclusion: The bass itself is worth the $50, my amp is terrible, but maybe yours will be alright.

u/djeneratorofhate · 1 pointr/Guitar

225 USD is pretty short for a guitar AND amp. If that's what you can spend then I would strongly recommend you to take the "starter packs" from Fender Squier (arround 200-250usd I guess) that include a Squier Fender guitar, a 10W amp, picks, jack...

The quality isn't too bad, and should give you a nice beginning with guitars.
You should also try some guitars in your local shop to see which one you seem more comfortable with.

Here's a link I found on Amazon :

Look for an "Epiphone Players Pack" on your local online stores-

Explorer style from Amazon
Les Paul style from Amazon

Personally I'm not convinced by those specific guitars / packs / prices - but they are around.

u/Moobyghost · 1 pointr/GameDeals

Is this cheap little guitar ok enough to use this "game" on/and learn how to play? http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Accessories-Beginner-Starter-Package/dp/B002RXXOX8/ref=pd_sim_vg_9

u/danyeissocool · 1 pointr/AskReddit

Does you son have any interest in playing music? If so this is a good way to start playing guitar.

u/splandifers · 1 pointr/Bass

I picked up this bass when it was on sale for $70 a few years ago. Do you think it'd be a significant upgrade?
http://www.amazon.com/Silvertone-Guitar-Package-Liquid-Black/dp/B0002D0HZ8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1411322296&sr=8-1&keywords=lb11+bass

u/NorswegianFrog · 1 pointr/Bass

If you're only starting out on bass and haven't played before, you'd be better off getting into a lower price range model, like an Ibanez GSR200 or one of its many equivalents, a Silvertone, a Fender, or a Dean, just as some examples.

I also recommend a lower priced model to start because of your concerns about blistering. Unless you're dedicating 4 or more hours a day every day of the week to practicing and playing, it's unlikely you'll encounter blistering at all, let alone need a mid-range priced model to start playing on.

A stretch of several hours with no prior experience might give you blisters, but playing and practicing in moderation will result in your fingers building calluses more gradually, without blisters.

Whatever you choose to do, best of luck!

Ok, it appears to be an unbranded beginner guitar pack that goes for about $80 on Amazon. Probably available in lots of 100 from Alibaba for $10 a piece. Looks like I didn't get a deal at all as I paid a little more than it would have cost online, and I didn't get the stand or the whammy bar.

https://www.amazon.com/ZENY-Electric-Accessories-Beginner-Starter/dp/B01KH6ROJ6/ref=mp_s_a_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1524983913&sr=1-10&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65

so i was initially eyeing this one. but after u mentioned an hss combo i found this one. hss guitar is $100 more but comes with 20 watt amp.
which one offer best value for the money?

u/slid3r · 1 pointr/guitars

I agree with this. A Fender Squier Strat, (even the affinity) is a GREAT first guitar with the understanding that you are going to spend 9 months to a year learning what it is to play guitar. Then you will have a better idea of what you want and you can trade up.

Squier is like a rite of passage for many guitar players. Plus, if you decide it's not for you, you're not out more than a couple hundred bucks.

You can get very cheap package guitar and amp deals for beginners.

Example:

Squier by Fender Affinity Stratocaster Beginner Electric Guitar Pack with Fender FM 10G Amplifier, Clip-On Tuner, Cable, Strap, Picks, and gig bag - Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B008F4UQVQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_9DNtzb0CYQDBF

I am looking for a super cheap bass for my band. I am not going to be using it but, buying it for some one to use in my band. I found this one off amazon witch is looks pretty good for the price any thoughts?

BTW I know nothing about bass guitars.

If your sibling or dad already have a video game system, you should steer them toward rocksmith. It comes with a cable to hook up your guitar to the console and the learning curve is quite easy for beginners. I highly recommend.

Oh, also, if they don't have a guitar and thinking of buying one, they sell a rocksmith package with an epiphone les paul special for $250. Link below is for ps4 but is also available on xbox 365, xbox one, and ps3.

http://www.amazon.com/Epiphone-Special-Rocksmith-Playstation-Included/dp/B00PMD0PSW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457485157&sr=8-1&keywords=rocksmith+kit

I went with something like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Electric-Accessories-Beginner-Starter-Sunburst/dp/B002RZCZ90/ref=sr_1_2?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1418259674&sr=1-2

It's a nothing special guitar, but it's a good price and I haven't had any issues with Davison. Also this one comes with an Amp and a few other extras. Amazon has a lot of different packages with their guitars, most are in the 100-120 dollar range.
