Several years ago, I had the pleasure of being meeting James Beard Award winner Deborah Krasner in Vermont, where she runs her Vermont Culinary Vacations.. Ms Krasner quite literally wrote the book on good olive oil. She told me that if you want to spend big $$$ on olive oil, there certainly are olive oils out there for $100, $200, $500 a bottle that are amazing and worth every penny if you have the resouces.

But, she said, if you are on an ordinary family's budget, you can't beat Kirkland Signature Olive Oil from Costco. According to Ms. Krasner, the Kirkland Signature is bar-none the best 'reasonably' priced oil out there because it's made in Italy, on a plantation that Costco actually owns and supervises to ensure for quality from tree to bottle. I have taken her advice and always ask for two big jugs of it for Christmas, and it usually lasts me most of the year.

Educate yourself on buying diamonds.

Buy second hand. A ring that cost 5000 new should cost $1000-$2000 maybe used.

Here's a book that would be nice to give along with a good EVOO.
