Hot water and a pipe cleaner or brush. They usually come with a tool like this.
Yeah, I should have been more specific in my first reply. Go to the store and buy a pack of fresh ones for like $1, or you can buy specialty produce scrubbers like this one.
To properly rinse a potato, follow this simple guide:
Step 1: Put a 1:1 solution of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle
Step 2: Spray potato generously with solution
Step 3: Scrub potato with a brush. I personally prefer to use a dedicated vegetable scrubber like this one:

Step 4: Rinse potato thoroughly under fresh water.
Step 5: Enjoy potato.
Scrub them, yes, with a sponge or, if you have one, with an actual vegetable brush.
If you want an excuse to break out the power tools, by all means.
For most people, a small veggie scrub brush would suffice.

The only issue is when guests try to do the washing up, they always reach for that brush, for some reason. A run through the dishwasher will sanitize it again, but I've also seen ones that are labeled which might help.
I purchased a straw cleaner and I always run water through the straw right after I finish my smoothie because cleaning dried smoothie from a jar or a straw is no fun! I've had it for around 6 months and it has held up well. Prior to that, I would immediately run water through the straw right after use and then clean it later with soapy water. The one I purchased is similar to this but it came only one to a pack rather than four.
OMG OMG OMG Make me smile, Rasta! veggie scrubbie brushie
for vegetables, I use this: http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Grips-Flexible-Vegetable-Brush/dp/B00004OCL2
for the mesh screen, I use one of these: http://www.amazon.com/Scotch-Brite-Products-Heavy-Duty-baked-Top-selling/dp/B004E2RXPA
in my experience, green scrubbies work so much better for cleaning off the mesh than a brush does.
I use some kind of brush to get rid of the dead skin on my head and I heard it's good for the hair too ..
