Dude if it was his birthday, get him his own clubs! Those are way too long for him. Not only will he develop bad habits, they could actually very easily injure him.

This is a video of Rory Mcilroy at the age of 3. His clubs are cut down to the right size, and I'd say it worked for him.

You can cut the clubs down yourself if you want, or just buy a junior starter set for like $100. I'm not telling you how to parent here, but if this is really something he enjoys and really something you want to nurture in him, get him some appropriate clubs!

They’ll pry my Adams Tight Lies hybrids hybrids out of my cold, dead hands.

Amazon is probably the easiest at around $100, but I always see people selling them second hand as well. We got lucky here and received some hand me downs from a generous neighbor who’s kids outgrew them.

My preference would be that all of your clubs are they same make/model. This is mainly for consistency purposes as the lofts of different clubs aren't the same across the set. One manufacturer's 7 iron may be 34 degrees another's may be 37. This creates yardage gaps between clubs that aren't consistent. I play every week to a 5 handicap and I've been debating getting rid of my 4 iron for a year now. Spend the $250 dollars and get a set of clubs that you can play with as you improve. If you get really hooked then you can worry about spending money and getting "custom" fit. If you really just want something to hit around with your pops look at something like this. Remember that hybrids are your friend.

They look okay for a starter set. You can't really go wrong for that price, even if he quits eventually. However, you may want to consider going with a brand name like Wilson, Adams, Tommy Armour, Tour Edge or Top Flight. Those brands are good value picks for beginners. They should be of higher quality than a set from "Prosimmon," and last longer if he does end up sticking with golf.

EDIT: Regarding the length of the clubs - Being tall does not always mean the player should get longer clubs (irons). It is all about the length of the person's arms compared to their height. If he is tall AND has long arms, he will use standard length irons. If he is tall and has short/regular arms, then he may need a 1'' extension on the irons. The driver and wedge length are the same for everyone. You might not need to worry about this now. If he ends up taking golf seriously and is over 6'4'', then he should get fitted eventually for longer irons.

good luck

I'm 5'1" and previously used Lady Tour Edge petite clubs with some that I even shortened. They didn't feel right and often times, my clubs ate the dirt real hard and killed my wrists. This year, I bit the bullet and purchased Wilson Profile SGI petite clubs, and they feel great. I don't feel the need to shorten any of the clubs other than the putter, but one can easily choke on the putter. I highly recommend these clubs. I mostly disliked the bag since I like to walk and carry my clubs. Shouldn't be a problem if you always use a cart.

Great deal for a good starter set

I bought this golf set last year used off amazon and honestly the whole set is solid. I upgraded because I decided I wanted to commit to the game and get top of the line stuff but this set honestly only needs a sand wedge or maybe a 60 degree or 52,54( whatever you prefer)wedge and you’re set for the course. I’d recommend this set.

I liked messing around with them because I was a hockey player and it was neat to use a split hand grip. I never used one regularly but I borrowed my uncle’s a few times.

I’m actually thinking of getting one of these.
I wonder if it sucks or not.
I’ll probably just stick to my PING.

I've got a Nickent 3DX 4 degree hybrid. I love it. I get better results with this cheap club than I do with my Taylormade R11 3 degree.

Solid advice, thanks for taking the time to write it all out. I might just grab some cheap grips to throw on.

These Cobra F7's caught my eye, somehow cheaper on amazon than on Cobra site & rockbottomgolf.

I bought these a few months ago. Got them for $199 at the pro shop where I was taking lessons.

Those look rather old. I found a more modern set by Falcon called the Fireblade and it seems like they are primarily sold in the UK. If you need clubs tomorrow and thats all you can find they should at least be able to get you on the course. If you had more time you could certainly do better than that set for the money. I would probably up the budget to 150-200 and get a starter set from Intech, Goden Bear, Wilson, PineMeadow or whatever brand your local big box store stocks. Something like this $189 Callaway Strata set or this $119 Confidence set or this $166 Wilson set are all miles better technology and quality wise especially if you plan to keep playing after this event.

I remember having a Falcon brand bowling ball 15+ years ago, if I had to take a guess they were a low end sporting good manufacturer for a few years and then were sold off or changed names.

From another perspective, it might be worth it just for the putter. Looks like an older BeCu Anser.

Edit: I had a look at the search results for golf clubs on craigslist for your area and in the same price range the Walter Hagen, Tommy Armour, and Acuity sets are all much better options that the set you posted.

Just putting these out there https://www.amazon.com/BombTech-Grenade-52-56-Wedges/dp/B01KN0SOYK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1499268190&sr=8-1&keywords=bombtech+wedges I ordered them for $97 and you get a 52, 56, and a 60 and from what I've read they are great for the price

EDIT: Have not got them yet, still waiting for them to arrive!

u/UsmcFatManBear · -9 pointsr/golf

Just got some Big Bertha irons.

Got to go play with them now.
