A Civil Action by Jonathan Harr is a non-fiction account from the plaintiff attorney's point of view of a major environmental law case. It was made into a movie with John Travolta that I never saw. The book went into great detail about civil procedure, so much so it actually helped me when i took civil procedure in law school after reading it.

I've only seen the movie and not read the book for The Paper Chase by John JAy Osboun, Jr. The movie is a little dated but often considered "must see" for prospective law students.

Acing Your First Year of Law School is widely recommended and was required as part of my law school's orientation program. My non-lawyer husband read it recently and appreciated the tips it gave him on reading cases. I don't recall finding it that useful, but others love it.
