A medium-sized compressor could potentially spray a fence using a low-volume, low-pressure gun. But even then, if you don't have ~5cfms coming out of that thing you're going to be stopping to let it recover and putting a lot of miles on your compressor.

I, personally, don't like spraying anything. Way higher learning curve and prep/cleanup time and higher material usage than people expect. Really only worth it in rare scenarios--and I've used both compressed air and airless sprayers.

Fastest moving fence staining I've found are the large brushes specifically built for decks and fences. This lets you move pretty quickly, but it isn't super messy and it's more frugal with material than a sprayer. It's also easier for an amateur to get a nice even coat than with a sprayer.

I used a paint edging tool and a telescoping pole. The edging tool screws onto the pole.

This is what I bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018246QI

Best tip is to NOT dip the edger in a tray of paint. You end up getting paint on the roller wheels, which transfers to the ceiling.

Use your paintbrush to put paint on the pad. Then the rollers stay clean, and your ceiling too.

Paint the ceiling first, smearing ceiling paint at least an inch onto the wall. Tape a paintbrush to your telescoping pole, and really get paint into the corners. This way you get that corner/edge covered, and you don't have to tape anything off.

Then put your roller on the telescoping pole. Use it to paint UP the wall as high as you can with a roller, but stop the roller about 3 inches below the ceiling. (This stops you from transferring paint from the roller up to your ceiling.)

Switch to the edging tool, and do that 3-inch gap. You get a nice clean edge.

Are the White China bristle brushes appropriate? Like this, but a 2".

I tried the ProClassic water alkyd, but the sheen was nowhere near the same even in semi gloss as the oil ProClassic. I tried both, and loved the look of the oil far better. It also sprayed so beautifully. Like a piece of porcelain when I got the thinning perfect for my sprayer. I just can't effectively mask and spray the boxes in the kitchen, and I worry about sags with the spray. On the flats, I went really heavy for a final coat and it came out so nicely.

Taklon Brushes roughly $30.00 properly thinned.

Purdy - ox hair. $20.00 (Home depot, Lowes) http://www.amazon.com/Purdy-144300020-Ox-O-Thin-Ox-Hair-Bristle/dp/B000YD318G/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1458342554&sr=8-3&keywords=purdy+ox+hair

Don't spend a bunch of money on a brush if you don't know how to clean one up. Practice makes perfect.

Got that tip from the Two-Inch Brush page in the sidebar! Got some "Wooster Softip Paintbrushes" off amazon for guests, since Bob's 2-inch is expensive.

Don't forget a paint thinner bucket and easels! These easels came out pretty cheap in bulk, but can be a little flimsy. Not horrible though! It worked well for me. If you can find bulk canvas, you can save money there too, be I noticed a significant difference between "value" canvas and the nicer grade ones. Good enough for a paint an sip, and the right bundle could bring them down to $4 a pop! (Check Amazon, Michaels sales. "Cyber Monday" is STILL going!)

It could end up being expensive to front the costs of supplies, but I had each of my friends pay $20 for entry -- still half price of an actual paint and sip -- and with one more class, I should be back in profit. From then on, the entry fee would cover the cost of using my paint and maybe upgrade tools. :)

Congrats on your first home, and thanks for the fun contest.

I am in the process of trying to renovate my 55 yo kitchen in a retro, kitshcy style. This funky paper towel holder would be super fun and fit right in, but these Purdy paint brushes are the best I've ever used, and probably more practical. Totally your choice if I should be lucky enough to win. Both can be found on my "Kitchen DIY Remodel" wishlist.

Thanks again for the awesome contest, and Stock My House! :)

I've painted entire homes with just two of these: https://www.amazon.com/Wooster-Brush-4231-2-1-Paintbrush-2-Inch/dp/B002LL96B0

You have to be careful when using it to always work with the angle of the brush and let it rest so the bristles don't bend backwards or get twisted. It's also important to do a good job cleaning it. When I finish, I like to shape it to a point so it keeps a good edge.
