I always figured OP was a fan of Lee Sang Eun since 'We Are Made of Stardust' is the name of her 14th album.
Nobody's yet mentioned Casiopea and T-Square, two pillars of the Japanese jazz fusion scene. They definitely trend towards more 'smooth jazz' harmonies than abstract harmonies, but both bands are extremely prolific so there's more than enough straight funk jams to satisfy for a long time.
To start, check their collab concert album Casiopea vs. The Square Live - the song Fightman really demonstrates their musicianship.
