I get so tired of the whole "you don't need a bed or any other basic furniture" thing being repeated over and over. Yeah, they are inconvenient to move, but there are ways around that without sleeping on a fucking yoga mat.

A bedframe that folds up flat and comes in various sizes.

A mattress that folds up rather compactly, can be used as seating, and comes in various sizes. Can be padded with a mattress pad and blankets.

Still too much? Get a Japanese style futon.

A desk that can be folded down flat. As a single person, I often eat at my desk.

Or if you don't like to eat at your desk, a collapsible small personal table...just sit on your bed.

They also make collapsible chairs.

I understand the desire to not have much of anything because it's a pain to move, but there's a point where it gets ridiculous. There are ways around it. Yeah, having sex on the floor is better than no sex at all, but I won't be having any sex if I don't get a good night's sleep, and I certainly need at least a few inches of padding more than a yoga mat provides.

I've been using a Japanese floor futon mattress. It's comfortable and I dig the all-black aesthetic. $95 from Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009EFA4U8.

Pretty good basic instructions. Key points:

  • Get good at musculoskeletal relaxation first. With no intention of getting to trance, lie or sit in a comfortable position with back straight, and practice successive muscular relaxation. I start at my feet and move upwards, tensing and relaxing every muscle I can feel. When relaxed, there is a sort of "letting go" feeling, the muscle/limb feels almost like empty space.
  • Don't attempt to get into trance until you can relax and "let go" of all of your body. It'll just be a waste of time.
  • Don't fall asleep. Don't use caffeine. I find being at a slight upward angle helps in preventing sleep, and also makes my jaw more comfortable. It must be relaxed, and I find it uncomfortable if it hangs open. I use a chair specifically for this purpose, similar to this, which allows me to choose the angle of my recline.
  • Using visualization techniques as suggested can be quite effective, once you are in trance. The challenge is being sufficiently deep in trance that your "energy body" or whatever is "loose" enough, but still retaining enough conscious awareness that you can formulate intent. It's a tricky balance to strike!
  • I highly recommend Robert Bruce's instructions, here. If you like it, please buy the book to support the author.

    Good luck!

My interior designer girlfriend had one of these foldable coffee tables and I picked one up too and loving it. It's pretty sturdy, foldable, and relatively affordable.

If the room is really that small, even a twin bed will take a lot of space. Perhaps a shikubuton?

u/DirtyChito · 3 pointsr/interiordecorating

If you know the color you can try to search for other tables in the same finish. You might even be able to contact IKEA and seeing if you can get the matching table. It looks like a craftsman oak or driftwood finish. This table looks similar.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DYR1KHW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_1ngFybHC57YNF

I have that one in a espresso finish and love it. Plus, being a lift-top is great for games or eating. My point is don't settle on something you don't enjoy looking at and using. But, at the same time, don't beat yourself up if it's not an EXACT match. Mine is ever so slightly different but you don't notice unless you're trying to inspect it.

Happy to help!

So specs aren't as important as form and function in this case, but I figured I'd get them out of the way first just in case you are curious:

  • CPU: Intel i5-7500
  • MOBO: MSI H270I GAMING PRO AC
  • SSD: Samsung 850 EVO 500GB
  • GPU: EVGA GTX 970
  • CASE: CoolerMaster Elite 130

Really the only elements that matter here as far as building a couch setup are motherboard and case, as they pertain to the form factor. I chose Mini-ITX to keep the size down, which helps the PC fit nicely under my TV alongside my consoles. The Elite 130 is big for an ITX case, but still got the job done for what I need. Specifically, I chose it for its ATX PSU and full size GPU support, in addition to its affordable price. For reference, ATX PSUs are generally the standard size power supplies for a PC. Smaller PSUs tend to command a significant premium compared to ATX PSUs of the same quality. Speaking premiums, you can end up paying a hefty premium for smaller and better designed ITX cases. just look at /r/sffpc if you want an example of how beautiful (and expensive) these things can get. There's some really awesome stuff in there, but honestly what you need will depend on your use case. If you're going to be doing any gaming, then a case that supports a GPU is a must, and you'll pay for cramming more power into a smaller space. However, since your current couch build is a Vista laptop, this may not be an issue for you at all!

In any case, deciding where you're going to put the PC is important. If size is a concern, there are still great options out there if you don't need too much performance. There are other Mini ITX builds that could accomplish this quite nicely, but if you don't need any PCIe slots at all, ASRock makes a beautiful Mini-STX machine called the DeskMini that is only 6"x6"x3"! I'm not 100% sure that the remote start I first mentioned would fit into this case, but I have a non-ASRock MiniSTX machine at home, so I can take a look and speculate if you'd like. And even if not, you could get that same function through Wake-On-LAN if you have an ethernet connection. Anyway, you can get a barebones model for $170 that supports the latest 8th and 9th gen Intel CPUs, but you'll need to add the CPU and SSD on your own. There are fully built models available, including AMD Ryzen models starting at $500, but again, depending on your needs, that may be more money than you need to spend. For instance, adding an Intel i3-8100 CPU for $135 and a Crucial SATA M.2 SSD for $63 brings you up to $368, and leaves plenty of upgradability down the line. Additionally, you could scale that price down further by lowering the SSD capacity, getting a Pentium CPU, buying used, etc. Let me know what you currently (and want to) do with your couch computer, and I'll be happy to help with a performance recommendation!

Moving on to peripherals, a wireless mouse/keyboard combo would certainly work well! There are plenty of bluetooth and USB dongle-based options on the market for you to consider. I personally use a Roccat Sova lapboard, which is wired, but I decided that was more important for me as it comes with USB ports for my headset and mouse. Plenty of options are available that are both cheaper and better suited for a wireless mouse and keyboard anyway, so don't feel like you need to go this route! Another product to consider is couch table. I used this model for my mouse before I learned about that Roccat lapboard, but I still love that table for couch use in general!

As for the display, I use my TV. It's a 4K TCL 55p607, which got great reviews for its price when I bought it. Full disclosure, TVs generally aren't as good as PC monitors when it comes to use with a PC. Refresh rates and input lag tend to be the biggest differentiating factors, but this video will do a far better job of explaining it than I can. Overall though, TVs as displays only get more viable every year! Just don't expect the budget set from Walmart to be as easy on the eyes as a high quality model. If you're going to be staring at it for hours at a time, it will likely be worth the investment to research and buy a better model! One other thing you will likely have to play with regardless of TV quality is visual scaling. Since default settings assume you are sitting a foot or two from the monitor, text and graphics will be very small at first. Customization options are getting better though; Windows has settings for text scaling now, and even has an automated tool to fix programs that aren't cooperating in this regard, but you will still likely have to tinker with settings in some programs to get things comfortably readable from the couch.

Something else to consider is audio, HDMI inputs, and overall technology compatibility. I have a surround sound setup via a Yamaha receiver. All my consoles (and my PC) plug into it, and it feeds HDMI to the TV. However, I ran into a snag on this front. My receiver is a few years old, and thus cannot support 4K at a refresh rate above 30Hz. Here's another TechQuickie video on refresh rates, and yet another about TVs faking better refresh rates (which should absolutely be disabled if you got this route). So since the receiver sits between the TV and the PC, that means that me getting both surround sound and 4K for my PC got very complicated. In the end, I decided to forego the 4K resolution and instead opt for the simplicity of sticking with 1080p at 60 Hz for my gaming PC. It ended up making sense to me since my hardware specs were better suited for 1080p gaming anyway, but again, higher resolution tends to be easier on the eyes when it comes to everyday PC use, so your mileage may vary.

Sorry this got long winded, but I hope this answers a lot of your questions. Feel free to reach out with any additional questions, I'd be happy to help in any way I can!

If you’re on a budget, I just ordered this today:

WE Furniture Minimal Farmhouse Wood Stand for TV's up to 78" Living Room Storage, 70 Inch, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B017R89RVK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_j0E0DbP8HCSB3

It’s the only cheap, good looking one I could find that didn’t require mounting it to the wall. However I only looked on IKEA, Best Buy, & Amazon

u/ihavetouchedthesky · 2 pointsr/AskEngineers

Good idea. The angular rotation desk design is an oddball I think, probably not many in commercial circulation but I'll look. Most are scissor lift or straight up/down somehow. Edit: Guess this really wouldn't matter on the design. Whatever commercial electric desks are using to lift should be rated for about the same. I'll have a look.

There are some non-motorized versions of a coffee table that have good design using springs and gas lifts Albeit these work due to a weighted base. Mine is very light.
Thank you

I'm really glad you linked the links and ideas. That art is a good example of how three pieces, presented well (framed, matted, good alignment/spacing) can really add to a room. And those storage cubes you can get at Walmart or Target (or your local equivalent) for cheap too.

> Also, you mentioned a coffee table but you linked something that Amazon says is a bench, I guess you just repurposed it instead?

Eh, bench style. Officially it is called the Nelson Platform Bench. It has been around for 70 years, but you wouldn't know it because it's just the kind of design that never goes out of style. Like Wayfarer sunglasses. That one link I posted is basically the same design, just with different legs.

While I'm on it, those Eiffel side chairs I linked to are almost as old, designed by Ray and Charles Eames, who are pretty famous in the mid-century modern style. Some models cost a pretty penny, but you can do a lot cheaper. You said you already had eating chairs, so maybe not these right away.

It sounds like a storage ottoman that can pull up to the couch may be more what you're after. Something like this or this?

This and this or this are other coffee table ideas with more storage. Apologies if Amazon does not ship to your area.

Speaking of which, I got a 'Japanese-style futon mattress' on amazon and it's worked great. Obviously meant to be folded in up to ~90 degrees (though with my build it doesn't get past like ~135). I'm sleeping on mine full-time so I threw a 2" memory foam topper on for extra padding and it's worked great. The only thing I'll say is that the futon might be a little more difficult to cut (if you don't fit in one of the standard sizes like I did) since it'll require some sewing, but still entirely possible. You'll have no problem with any modifications to the memory foam

That brand makes other sizes / colors. Honestly, I can't recommend it enough. I've had it for a year now and have slept on it every single night in that period of time. It definitely has gotten a bit "worn in" and isn't as cushy as it used to be, but it's still super comfortable.

Honestly, the only problem I've had with it is that it did have a very strong smell at first, but some fabric spray and a day of airing out worked wonders. Would also highly recommend a mattress protector.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions at all!

I agree with you. Thinking of this cool modular piece!

u/last-line · 1 pointr/battlestations

Not sure how to add more photos of it... I'm new here, haha.

I'll give some quick tips though.

This is my best standup desk investment - the Topo, makes standing for hours much easier - http://amzn.to/2eCjgC9.
My desk 'top' is a table from IKEA, it's pretty small but works great for a keyboard/mouse/other misc items - http://amzn.to/2eCjY2s.
This is my shelf that holds my laptop - might only work well in a setup where you're in a corner like I am - http://amzn.to/2frgGQU.
Amazon Basics wall arm is great, but you can use whatever - http://amzn.to/2frfa0V.
I use this to keep power bricks, etc out of sight - http://amzn.to/2ed49k6.
I put this little led strip behind my monitor - it's powered by USB and I have it plugged into my monitor so it is on when my monitor is on - http://amzn.to/2fIhguL.
Mousepad, i like the Razer Sphex for this, just because it's so thin - http://amzn.to/2eCmPbs - but it isn't the best pad for gaming, etc.

You'll want to put your desk top height so that when standing on the mat in whatever you're gonna use (I just wear socks) when your arms are at your side, your elbows form a 90 degree angle to go onto your keyboard/mouse. Your monitor should be at a height where your eyes are inline with about 2/3 up your screen (1/3 of your screen is above your eyes.)

I also put the shelf so that the laptop is below my monitor in case I want to pull my monitor out from the wall - however 99.9% of the time I find that I just have my monitor pushed back as close to the wall as it goes.

When mounting the desk to the wall, you'll want to try to put the center part into a stud, and use some decently burly drywall anchors for the rest. You'll find you may inadvertently lean on the desk and things like that, so you want it to be pretty solid.

Good luck!

I really think you should buy this chair I know it is already on your wishlist, but it makes sense to buy something from your wishlist because it is obviously something you like. Also, being that you seem to read, having a comfy chair around is always a good thing to have.

I was going to suggest some art supplies for you, but they were all under $50 so that wasn't going to do.

For me, I would love this shower curtain It sort of relates to the chair being that it is black and white and gives an added design quality to my living space. =3

I live in a 230sqft studio and I have my bed on a FOLDABLE metal platform (https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Foldable-Platform-Under-Bed-Storage/dp/B073WRF565) , I also have it on risers so that I can put my storage bins underneath (ie extra blankets, winter gear, camping gear, etc) As for a mattress, I have a Nectar mattress. I also used to sleep on the floor lol I didn’t have any issues with it but it took up a lot of space that I didn’t have at my studio.

I have a couch that is also a futon for guests and it also came in a box so if I need to move again, I I could easily break it down to fit it in my hatchback. (https://www.amazon.com/Novogratz-Brittany-Sofa-Futon-Linen/dp/B01LY1WBQN) it looks expensive, a little on the firm side but still comfortable with the right pillows. I got it on prime day for $200 😅

I don’t have a closet but I have an ikea wardrobe. It’s small and has allowed me to downsize on my clothing.

I also have this coffee table that looks pretty good and the legs can fold down and I can put it away if I need more space. (https://www.amazon.com/AZUMAYA-Folding-Coffee-Center-TAC-229/dp/B0077HY08M)

Paracord sleeving is rather easy, a 15 foot cable might take you 20 minutes.

Another way to keep the cables off the ground would be a guide. Like a hook angled upward from the chair base to act as an arm carrying the cable. Or instead of going through all of this you could build from the desk instead of the chair, or put a c shape table on each end of your chair.
