I prefer the Rosle can opener. Been 5+ years, seems to still leave non-sharp, resealable lids alongside open cans.

u/Stupoopy · 5 pointsr/Cooking

Get the new one. The vintage stuff is cool, but make your own vintage stuff.

The point of getting vintage stuff now is that a lot of it is considered high quality. In this case, you have access to the same quality new. The bonus is that you support American folks making your high quality materials. The resale market adds little to the people pressing these things out.

EZ DUZ IT has multiple colors too.

The Swing-A-Way does the job with little fuss and bother and will last forever.

u/Zombies_Are_Dead · 3 pointsr/specializedtools

The Swing-A-Way that is in the picture is the best I've found. I've had mine for 14+ years and it still outperforms any new one I've tried at other peoples houses. And they are very affordable too.

EDIT: Never mind, they changed the design since I bought mine. I linked to the good ones below thanks to /u/linotype.

Try getting a better opener?

The side-cut can opener is a brilliant design, no sharp edges, just lift the lid and toss it in the recycle.

I don’t actually know what brand I have, but you want something like this. Stainless steel. Not whatever crap they use for the Walmart ones.

I had the same problem and bought this one. I have had it for 2 years now and no signs of slowing down. I don’t use a whole lot of cans but this seems to be quality.

u/eiridel · 2 pointsr/rheumatoid

Electric can opener! It's my favorite thing and there's even a tool on the end for pop top cans. This is the one I have. Before I got it I seriously struggled with that all the time. I didn't even know they were a thing until my roommate brought it home as a surprise. I think he was sick of having to turn the crank all the time.

If you do a lot of writing or drawing, grab some thick pens or mechanical pencils. Like, this thick. That's another thing I wish I'd discovered much sooner. Crayola Model Magic is great to make nice and soft custom grips for pens out of, if you don't mind them being a little unprofessional looking.

Also a nice scrubby brush with a long handle for the shower was wonderful when my shoulders decided to jump in on the arthritis game.

Seconding the good shoes thing.

u/bunnysoup · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

I really want this can opener. My cheap ass dollar store can opener is finally punking out on me. It takes two people, considerable forearm strength, massive consentration, and a flat head screw driver to get into my spaghetti o's now.

u/Central_Incisor · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Travel Can Opener This will most likely be my next can opener. Basically a beefier P-38.

u/felix_jones · 2 pointsr/AskReddit

Yep, the 407 just seems to be the model, with the lat two numbers being the color of the handle. See a red one here: http://www.amazon.com/Amco-Swing-407RD-Portable-Opener/dp/B000W275JK/

u/woodrail · 2 pointsr/gadgets

Been there. Get yourself the classic : AMCO SWING-A-WAY. It seems to be the only can opener that doesn't suck. My mom had one when I was growing up. I think the design hasn't changed in like 50 years.

u/mrhoopers · 2 pointsr/Cooking

First, the Magnum is THE only pepper mill I'd ever use. The ONLY downside is that I go through pepper like no one's business. It's crazy how much that puts out.

As far as openers: This Oxo is what I have

u/s0rce · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I used to have an old made in england can opener like this:

https://www.target.com/p/stainless-steel-can-opener-room-essentials-153/-/A-14769512

However, it was lost and all the replacements were junk, usually made in China.

I looked around and found this model from WMF:

https://www.amazon.com/WMF-Profi-Stainless-Steel-Opener/dp/B00005O65T

I've been using it since 2012, not exactly a lifetime but its perfect, highly recommended. Its functional, durable, not-ugly giant oxo good grips, reasonably priced...

I have a Culinare Lift-Off can-opener. My wife brought it with her to university in 1999, and it's still going strong today.

u/hectorinwa · 2 pointsr/BuyItForLife

I have the same complaint. When you use a normal opener, the lid fits just inside the can so you can put it in and squeeze out the tunawater. With the no-cut kind (I have this kind which works pretty much the same, but from the side) you're left with a lid that fits over the top and does not fit inside, so you have to sort of warp the can a bit to get it to snug up but not so much that the tunawater doesn't drip out.

u/TheDuraMaters · 1 pointr/CasualUK

Get a top opening one, I’ve had this one for over 10 years.

Damn, well I can say for the past 11 years I've had this guy: http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-Classic-Can-Opener-Red/dp/B005D6FXEY

and never encountered a hiccup. I only know it's been 11 years because it was a wedding gift.

u/Beeip · 1 pointr/videos

I've read (on Amazon reviews, so take that for what it's worth) that the Swing-Aways' quality suffered in recent years. I'm probably going to go with the EZ-Duz-It. Thanks though!

NOTE:
For the winner by OXO THIS is the model shown in the test results and THIS is the newer model. ~OP

TESTING NOTES

WINNER:
Magnetic Locking Can Opener by Oxo - $19.99

> This can opener was intuitive to use and easy to attach and detach from cans. It was "comfortable," "very smooth," and very efficient in operation. Because it is a traditional opener, this model leaves a lid with sharp edges (its only downfall), but minimizes potential danger with a magnet that allows "neat and safe" lid disposal.

3 others were also RECOMMENDED:

  • Kuhn Rikon Slim Safety Lidlifter - $11.95

    > Testers praised the handy "change in feeling" once the can was completely open. The "dishwasher-safe claim was spot-on: There were no changes in performance or appearance after several wash cycles. A few testers has mild complaints about the "awkward position" of the oversized turning knob, resulting in a slight demerit in the performance rating.

  • Progressive International Safety I-Can Opener - $12.79

    > The unique ratchet cutting wheel mechanism was "easy to operate" and comfortable, but was "hard to know when finished." Pincers disposed of the cut lid safely. For some testers, the instructions for this opener were "not obvious," even with visuals on the packaging.

  • Good Cook 4-1 HT Safe Can Opener - $9.99

    > "Clearly written instructions" and "smooth gears" made this opener easy and efficient as first use. Also, testers appreciated the "perceptible change in feeling" when the can opener had rounded the entire can. This model lost a few points for not having a lid-gripper.

2 others were RECOMMENDED WITH RESERVATIONS:

  • Zyliss Safe Edge Can Opener - $14.95
  • Miu CanDo Safety Can Opener - $9.99

    2 others were NOT RECOMMENDED:

  • Chef'n EZ Squeeze 1-Handed Can Opener
  • CIA Masters Collections Side Can Opener
u/meatwad75892 · 1 pointr/AskReddit

1 can of chili beans, 1 can of Rotel, 1 small pouch of ready-to-eat chicken.

Mix in bowl, microwave.

$2.50 and roughly 600 cals of deliciousness and protein and complex carbs that will actually fill you up.

And if you don't have access to a can opener, grab a P-51 and toss it in your lunch bag.

I'm thinking of trying one of these.

Replace the can opener.... what a weight savings!

I have a ceramic letter opener that looks like this. The blade itself is the size of a sesame seed and protrude out of the holder only enough to cut through 1 or 2 sheets of paper. I've had it for over 5 years now and used it to open all my mails. It's as sharp as I first got it. Best of all it was a free promotional item and can be had for less than $5 on ebay.

These are nice but pricy.

u/BitterGrace · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I use this for blister packs. Only was $6, and is magnetic. Still works 3+ years later. Sometimes it's awkward for them, but it works like a dream generally without issue.

u/infinis · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I hate this one for the last 5 years. Even bought one for the deli I used to work at, which was going throu 2-3 per month. It's still there 2 years later.

The only issue it cut on the side and not throu top.

u/CaptMerrillStubing · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

I don't remember my specific one, but get something with thicker metal and a studies hinge. The flimsy on from OP is too bendy to work effectively.

Mine is something like this

u/justanotherreddituse · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

This is the best one I have ever used.

http://www.amazon.com/Starfrit-Mightican-Manual-Can-Opener/dp/B000X9CDY4

It takes a lot of abuse too, it comes camping with me. Slammed around in canoes, being dragged through the mud and even being thrown at bad guests.

u/atarev · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

The classic Swing-A-Way wins every time in my book. I've tried OXO, KitchenAid,, pampered chef and countless others, each of them fails in some way, usually in the most infuriating way possible. The Swing-A-Way "just works", it's the one your grandma had in her drawer.

EDIT: whoops, link. http://www.amazon.com/Amco-Swing--407RD-Portable-Opener/dp/B000W275JK/ref=sr_1_6?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1425576545&sr=1-6&keywords=swing+away+can+opener

u/jurniss · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

this exact OXO is better than any other can opener I've used. Not vouching for any other OXOs though.

u/JaneEyreForce · 1 pointr/southpaws

My mom got me one that is a ratcheting one with the mechanism on the top. Can be used either-handed very easily. I have had it over 8 years and it is great.
