Pro tip: get a styptic pencil (aka shaving pencil). Makes it clot pretty much instantly.

u/newtmitch · 11 pointsr/AskMenOver30

Check out a Merkur safety razor (https://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Long-Handled-Safety-Razor/dp/B000NL0T1G) and a sample blade pack from amazon.

Get an inexpensive shaving brush to start with to see how you like it, but eventually drop more money on a nice brush. Spend $10-$15 to start then expect to drop $50+ on a nice pure badger hair brush in a few months. The badger brush that I bought for like $70 I still have with me 4-5 years later (although admittedly I don't shave terribly often). Once you get that pricey brush, get a cheap plastic holder for it as well - keep the bristles pointing down instead of up - after using it leaving them facing upwards allows the water to settle around the base and weaken the glue holding in the bristles, ultimately destroying your expensive brush. Not good.

Check out Proraso soaps in a bowl - more convenient than paste or anything else, I've found. They have multiple types, here's my favorite as it makes my face a little tingly: https://www.amazon.com/Proraso-Shaving-Soap-Refreshing-Toning/dp/B00837YY18

If you prefer your own bowl, Proraso makes a paste and you can get a mug or bowl to mix it in - I found I preferred the ready-to-go stuff as it's faster and makes it more likely I'll shave regularly. :)

Then, after you've done all that and realized it's the best shave you've ever done and it's actually way more fun to shave than you ever thought it'd be, go for a straight razor. Don't do an actual blade, strop, and all that stuff right away. Instead, just go get a disposable straight razor blade holder and some blades: https://www.amazon.com/Equinox-Professional-Straight-Single-Blades/dp/B0118BJ0PA and learn how to use that thing. Then if you're like me and shave once every week or two (super lazy!) you can literally take weeks of beard off in a single pass with a straight razor and a fresh blade. I stopped here, personally, didn't go on to a full straight razor as they're pricey and you need to maintain it (oil, strop, etc) - likely something I'd let slide and ultimately wish I hadn't spent the money on...

Also, get a styptic pencil: https://www.amazon.com/Woltra-Styptic-Pencil-Small-0-25/dp/B000EGIEOE - it stings a bit when you cut yourself but almost immediately stops the bleeding. Unlike cuts/nicks with a multiblade razor, cuts with a safety razor or straight razor are actual "cuts" - and they bleed like cuts. Like, "blood trickling down your face" type cuts. They look worse than they are because you have water on your face and it thins the blood and it runs more, but it bleeds. This will stop that bleeding really fast at the expense of a little more pain right up front. I keep one handy.

I've turned several friends on to at least the safety razor. It's way more fun to shave that way, less expensive, and is better for your skin to boot. If you like a really close shave, too, you can get a better shave overall with a 3-pass technique (I don't do that, personally) as you get better. All sorts of options...

edit: mentioned the brush holder
edit2: styptic pencil

A big negatory on all three of those. They're equally bad. Matter of fact, Amazon is generally a poor choice when it comes to shopping for a shave brush. Yes, you'll occasionally stumble on a good one, and might even get a bargain on it, but you have to know what you're looking for and how much it should cost.

If you have to shop on Amazon, and if your top price is $20, I recommend any Semogue boar. They're economical, and, once they're broken in, perform very well.

If you want a badger brush in that price range, go to eBay and buy direct from China. Here is an Ace Shaving silvertip for $19 shipped. Ace is a respected vendor; you could look at Virginia Sheng and Frank Shaving, too.

But IMO the best $20 brush that doesn't need to be broken in is a synthetic. Again, stay away from Amazon. Maggard Razors has a bunch of good choices for you.

u/comawhite12 · 10 pointsr/popping

Have an Styptic Pencil for shaving on hand.

It'll burn like hell, but will stop it right quick.

u/nobodysawme · 9 pointsr/Wetshaving

u/amanforallsaisons did a fine job. However, you're asking about amazon and looking for a budget deal.

The Dorco PL-602 is the most-affordable good DE razor.

The Body Shop synthetic brush is a plisson-type synthetic. I don't have one, but I know people who do. It looks good, and should be soft-tipped, and easy to use.

EDIT: let's go with one I do have: razorock plissoft

Soaps are a littler harder - do you like fruity scents or non-fruity scents? There are shaving soaps on Amazon (Razorock and WSP) but not in sampler form. You won't go wrong with soaps from either Razorock or WSP.

A blade bank I picked this as the add-on item rather than Prime, because it's cheaper and you'll have enough to make the add-on order work if you use your cart instead of 1-click buying.

Get a sampler pack of blades. I prefer tryablade.com for samplers, but if you wish to do amazon, this isn't all bad. The normal problem with a sampler on amazon is that you're getting blades from the same factory, so you aren't really getting a chance to sample well. Here, they're at least well-regarded blades, so it's not terrible.

Alum - if you hold alum to your face where you nick yourself, it will stop the bleeding.

Witch Hazel. A lot of people like Thayer's. You can use any witch hazel you like as an aftershave - I put this one here because I'm tempted to get it myself. lemon Thayer's witch hazel

Balm. Not strictly necessary, but if you find yourself burning, it won't hurt to have on hand. nivea post shave balm

Honestly? If you use shave oil, like Shave Secret (walmart), you don't need the brush or shave soap. Savings can be had if you're incredibly price sensitive. But many people prefer the brush and lather method.

Shave bowl. I use a collapsible bowl which is convenient for bowl lathering when I travel.

u/Greyzer · 8 pointsr/wicked_edge

Just see how lathering goes before trying a distilled water shave. You can check water hardness here.

Any bowl will do for lathering, you can just get a salsa bowl or something like it from the kitchen or check at the Dollar Store. If you want an official lathering bowl and money is no problem check out this apothecary bowl.

Your list looks very well researched. All products are widely recommended over here.

For shaping, check out the youtube vids by Betelgeux.

As for the steamer, I'd just try hot towels first to see if it works for you and upgrade later if it gives real benefits...

u/AWildLurkerAppears64 · 6 pointsr/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

Styptic pencils are your friend 😶 I know those feels though...got a consultation for laser/electrolysis this Thursday

u/boostdd · 6 pointsr/Wet_Shavers

If someone was looking for a brush in this price point, I would highly suggest they spent the extra $10 and get a L'Occitane Plisson. But if I had to choose one brush $20 or under, it would be the Semogue 1305. I have a 830 which has the same exact knot, and I really enjoy it. I soak my boars in warm water while I shower which makes it plenty soft with great backbone. If you don't soak them they can tend to be a bit scratchy. There is also a break-in period with boar brushes but once the hairs begin to split you will notice the brush will feel softer. It has it's con's but at that price point It's hard to beat a quality boar brush. I've never used Omega but those also seem to be popular in that price point as well.

u/hazeleyedwolff · 6 pointsr/TrollYChromosome

You're right, styptic is the way to go. I prefer this roll-on styptic to the pencils.

u/murderousthoughts · 6 pointsr/wicked_edge

Some people store their brushes in a toilet paper tube when they travel. Or you could pick something up like this...http://www.amazon.com/Muhle-Pinsel-Round-Travel-Holder/dp/B0036BF97Y/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hpc_1

u/trailrider · 5 pointsr/AskMen

I use a Merkur Safety Razor. Sometimes, the older ways are better. I get just as good of a shave as with any triple or more bladed razor. There is a learning curve to it though. You can and will cut yourself. Once you get use to it though, it's great. You can use a styptic pencil for small nicks.

u/bwhite3604 · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

my nik is sealed off of amazon for $5.49

http://www.amazon.com/COSMETICALLY-SEALED-Sealed-Styptic-0-17/dp/B001B8HRII/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325280869&sr=8-1

definitely something you should get in the near future. you could pick up a regular styptic pencil at pretty much any store, but the roller-ball action of my nik is sealed is much more comfortable.

as for the moment rubbing alcohol will definitely prevent it from infecting, but wont stop the bleeding at all.

u/zebedir · 5 pointsr/CasualUK

You don't have to spend the earth on it, just go for something on Amazon with decent reviews like this or this

I like to use this shaving soap, it is kinda pricy but it lasts me ages and it's actually really nice. You'd also need a brush sorta like this and maybe a small bowl to lather up in like this one. Initial outlay is fairly pricy, probably somewhere between 20-30 quid, but once you have that stuff buying more soap and razors once every blue moon works out dead cheap and will give you a better shave.

I'm really not a fan of normal disposable razors you'll find in a supermarket, I find those multi-razor jobbies just tug more and wear out far too quickly for how much money they cost

Also if you're unsure how to use it there's a bunch of how-to guides on youtube for shaving with a safety razor

u/mickawes · 5 pointsr/BuyItForLife

Nice manicure kit (cant go wrong with anything from Solingen in Germany).

Or a nice shave kit - Safety Razor, Brush (at least best badger quality), Bowl, stand

u/3agl · 5 pointsr/wicked_edge

I can only recommend what I have-

Item | link
---|---
The Chieftain | link
Badger Hair Brush | link
shaving soap | link
stand | link
blades | link
total | $70.65, not including shipping (but with prime... :D)

It's pretty modest, but if you consider 52 blades that are of the "normal" variety, it can be cheaper in the long run. I still have a bunch of blades left over, so don't think that those 100 astra blades are all the way used up.

Semogue freak checking in.

Affordable Boar (my personal favorite brush) Semogue 830

Top Tier Boar Semogue Owner's Club w/ Ash Handle

Top Tier Badger Semogue Owner's Club Badger w/ Cherry Handle

Semogue's are the best. I'll take that to my grave. YMMV....but when you're right, you're right. These bad boys take AGES to break in... but once you break em in it's the greatest shaving instrument you'll ever use..ever.

I recommend the Semogue 830 to everyone.

u/MagicGini · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

I'm using the Merkur 38C and I love it. I have very thick/coarse hair so the extra heft feels great.

I also use the Taylor of Old Bond Street sandalwood scent, it smells absolutely fantastic.

I tend to get pretty bad razor burn so I use Nivea post shave balm for sensitive skin, which also smells great. Using the sandalwood cream with that balm makes my bathroom smell like walking into a barber shop from 100 years ago haha. Even my wife loves the smell.

I definitely do recommend at least trying a pre-shave oil. Everyones different, it may do nothing for you, or it may really help. I use Lather & Wood, and it stopped like 99% of my razor burn

Blade sampler pack, YES!

I also highly recommend you try out one of the less expensive options for a shaving brush before jumping to that expensive of a brush. I started with the Perfecto cause it had great reviews and was inexpensive (its just a pure badger hair, nothing too fancy). My plan was to upgrade brushes down the line, but it feels totally fine. If I ever upgrade, I'd get the Parker silvertip brush since its silvertip badger hair, but still only ~$60

Edit: 10/10 recommend an alum block or styptic pencil, especially if you're new to wet shaving!

Good Luck!

u/ketchuegrast · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

No, no, no, oh hell no on the brush. That is a Syntex and it's complete trash.

Instead, get an Omega boar or a Semogue boar or a Vie-long horse brush. Like these:

http://smile.amazon.com/Omega-10065-Bristle-Shaving-Handle/dp/B00KZAGDSI/

http://smile.amazon.com/Semogue-1305-Superior-Bristle-Shaving/dp/B004OJS8E8/

http://smile.amazon.com/Vie-Long-12705-Shaving-Acrylic-Handle/dp/B008MN7QDG/

In addition to or instead of Proraso, grab a Chiseled Face Groomatorium soap. It is better.

The blade sampler is adequate, but really you don't need multiple packs of the same blades to find out if a blade is good for you or not. A better value for blade samplers can be found at tryablade.com or a Maggard Razors DE blade sampler.

The EJ razor and alum block are good items. Are you limited to only buying from Amazon?

u/Yarcofin · 4 pointsr/wicked_edge

Soap is exactly what it sounds like, no trick language here... just plain soap. It's a hard puck of soap similar to a bar of soap, but with special ingredients to give it extra lather / glide (specialized for shaving.) They can come in a bowl (normally lathered in a separate bowl or in your hand) or as a stick (applied directly to the face.)

Cream comes in a tube like toothpaste

Some Italian soaps like Proraso and Cella brands are somewhere halfway between a cream and a soap. Proraso makes a good soap for sensitive skin which I'm using and would recommend. It also lathers easier than any other soaps I've tried.

For a $60 budget I would pick up a $10 soap, a $10 Omega boar shaving brush, an Edwin Jagger or Parker razor, and an Alum block (Alum is a naturally-occuring astringent & antiseptic mineral block, applied to the face after shaving to close pores and prevent irritation -- it helped reduce redness/pimples/ingrown hairs for me.)

You will also probably want to invest in a blade sampler pack soon after you start shaving, so you might as well pick one of those up with your first purchase to save on shipping. If that makes the price too high for you, you can swap out the Edwin Jagger / Parker razor for a $2 Sodial DE razor.

u/codece · 3 pointsr/whatisthisthing

Could it be a styptic pencil? Usually found in the bathroom or 1st aid kit -- you moisten it with water, and then use it to stop bleeding from minor nicks and cuts, like when shaving for example.

Example

u/get_stupid_answers · 3 pointsr/samharris

Pro tip: Buy some quality safety blades and you'll save thousands over your life over a shitty "5-blade" gimmick, plus get a better shave. The most expensive part of the setup is getting a quality shaving brush. You don't want to spend less than $60 on that because the glue will fall apart and you'll just have to buy another. Buy a good one and it will last you forever.

There are great reasons never to buy Gillette again. Their ad campaign isn't one of them.

u/[deleted] · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

If you go with a cheap brush, splurging on a good cream is worthwhile.

If you go with an expensive brush, Col. Conk is good enough.

Cheap Brush / Expensive Cream

Expensive Brush / Cheap Soap

The stand does not make a bit of difference, and a mug is a mug, unless it's a scuttle.

Thanks for asking this. I'm in the market for one too and have considered getting the Shavex for this reason.

  1. Safety Razor or Straight Edge barber's blade

-I got mine on Amazon for only ~5 bucks. One person in that subreddit linked it though and I don't think I'd be able to find it. It was so cheap because the shipper was from China and it took 15 days to get here but it has lasted me quite some time. But I would recommend looking at the reviews and getting one in the 15-20 dollar range. With replacement blades (which are cheap...I bought a sample pack which came with like 50 total and I'm probably not even half way through them yet). you can just pop one right in and go...they also will last you about 5 shaves each.

  2. Shaving Soap
Look into Poraso. I have the green kind. I was sensitive to the menthols in other Shaving Creams but this shaving soap does everything I need it to and doesn't irritate my skin or eyes.
    http://www.amazon.com/Proraso-Shaving-Eucalyptus-Menthol-Formulation/dp/B00837YY18/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1413959827&sr=1-2&keywords=poraso

-It says I actually purchased this item on Jan 7 2014. I will need a new one in prob 2 months but still!

  3. Boar/Badger shave brush
You can get these for cheap some places, but since I showed you stuff on amazon here's what you'd be looking at:
    http://www.amazon.com/Perfecto-100%25-Badger-Shaving-Brush/dp/B00LDYFGFQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1413959958&sr=1-4&keywords=shaving+brush

  4. If you want to get pre shave lotion go ahead. I don't use pre shave lotion so i can't recommend anything. wicked_edge would know though.

  5. For after shave I just use Cetaphil moisturizer and it works perfect for me, but look at wicked_edge again for after shaves.

That covers pretty much all of the basics I think. Some of the stuff seems expensive but it's a very worthwhile investment and will save you money in the long run. I remember going through 3-5 blade gillette razors every month which at 10 bucks a pop adds up, plus they irritated my skin and the shaving cream sucked. So i definitely recommend making an investment in these certain products, they've helped me quite a bit.

In the preview my numbering is screwed up, so idk what to do about that, but yeah.
u/shavesmith · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Dat patina.

Check out these razor stands for doing daily shave pics. Keeps that edge safe and sound.

u/Papander · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Note that synthetic brushes have different "generations" meaning that the fibers used are different. Sadly I don't believe Amazon sells any of the good synthetic brushes.

If you are on a budget and locked to Amazon I'd probably go with a Semogue 830 boar brush, or little bit cheaper Omega 10048 boar brush.

u/landofbunnies · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Gotchu, fam.

Chrome Razor and Shaving Brush Stand from Super Safety Razors https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KGHQF3S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3jMIzbYJGV8X9

Posting from mobile and slightly tipsy. Copy/pasta as needed.

u/Angry_Cardboard_Box · 3 pointsr/Wetshaving

A major positive with the synthetics is that they dry super fast. I have mostly synthetics, but do have a few boar and a couple of badger brushes, and the synthetic brushes are barely wet once you shake them out. I believe it's because water doesn't penetrate the synthetic fiber as it does on animal hair. Unfortunately, I don't travel for work much at all. Some other travelers can chime in, but some may use something like this. I have seen some nice, inexpensive plastic ones, but I forget where.

u/HeyRememberThatTime · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

Well, I usually travel with a Simpson Case brush with a travel tube, myself. But you can find generic travel tubes online that will fit a larger range of brush sizes. You can also find vintage shaving kits that have travel tubes you can reuse, like the one breenisgreen just posted about yesterday.

If you've got a brush small enough you can even just get a large prescription pill bottle and drill some air holes in it, too.

Another alternative, is a turnback brush specifically for traveling. The handle of the brush doubles as a protective cover for the knot when you're not using it.

u/polypeptide147 · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

I have both of those. I got them when I started too. It is definitely worth it, in my opinion, to get a higher quality one.

Here is the brush I use. You can get it in different colors and such.

Here is a commonly recommended Omega brush.

I've never hear a bad thing about either of those brushes. Boar brushes take a bit of time to break in (like a week or so, don't worry). You'll notice that the hairs get a lot of split ends. This is a good thing. The brush stays 'stiff' and maintains the same amount of backbone, but becomes very soft.

Here are the Stirling soaps. They are all pretty much the same but with different scents. The only difference is the 'glacier' ones, 'on the rocks' one, or 'arctic' one. They all have menthol, which, like that green proraso I talked about earlier, will feel great, especially in the summer. The executive man one is the most popular (I think you can sort it by that).

Oh also, don't get blades in a store. You'll pay too much. These are the ones I use at less than 10 cents a piece.

u/TheBoed9000 · 3 pointsr/wicked_edge

It looks like a satin tip shave brush in black.

From what I read they are decent synthetic brushes but the knot isn't very well secured to the handle. Still it's only like $20 to replace one even if it does eventually fail.

Magic Fragrant Shaving Powder

Review on this product had great insight on how to use it...

That's not to say it doesn't work at all. Just that it doesn't work nearly as well on coarse hairs that it does on fine hairs. In other words, if you're wanting this for your back, legs, arms...you'll be largely amazed at how well it takes off hair. You're unlikely to be impressed with groin, face, etc. where the hairs may be more coarse.

For my case, I bought it for my face. There, it took three treatments before I saw even the slightest hint of smooth, hairless skin. Even then, it still left stubble on the neck and under my jaw. Comparing this with a safety razor where I could get these hairs quite easily, this was a bit depressing. What it did do a good job of was minimizing razor bumps and ingrown hairs.

A lot has been made of the mixing strategy. Yes, it's pain. But that's because the instructions are faulty. If you mix the way it tells you on the can, not only will you be stirring forever, you'll end up with a very slimy, very inefficient solution that will make you think you got scammed. I'm going to help you.

You need:

  • A mixing cup. You can use any cup, or you can get official and get something like Edwin Jagger Porcelain Shaving Soap Bowl With Handle, Black

  • A spoon. Or something else to stir with. I prefer a spoon but it's up to you.

  • A shaving brush. You can use your hand, but I strongly recommend against it. Just get a shaving brush. Like Escali 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush

  • A large towel - you'll use both ends. Or if you're not into messing towels up, consider something like Kleenex Hand Towels Everyday, 60 Count where you can throw them away when done.

  • A preshave balm or lotion, or oil. You want something that is NOT alcohol based. Something like John Allan's Slick Water Lotion, 2 Ounce

  • Something to tame the skin afterwards. Something like Proraso Aftershave Lotion, Refresh, 100 ml

Mind you, the above are just recommendations. Choose whatever products you want, just make sure they are comparable to the above. Or don't use them, but be prepared to be frustrated with your results.

First, to give you a sense of scale and scope. A heaping teaspoon is enough for a grown man's entire face. If you're doing legs, arms, chest, etc, bump it up to two teaspoons. This is just to have enough when you're done mixing. Next, your water ratio should be just enough to end up with a consistency between pancake mix and cake batter; not runny, but not overly thick. You'll know it when you see it. Imagine perfectly made oatmeal "stick to the ribs" style. That's what you want. So if you have a heaping teaspoon of powder, put maybe a barely full teaspoon of cool water in. Then stir slowly using the spoon (or whatever). It will look like it's not mixing; it is. It just takes a while.

Here's the hint: you'll know when you're almost done because you'll get hit in the face with a smell that I can't describe, but you'll know it for what it is. If you've ever used NAIR, or any similar depilatory, it's the exact same smell. Once that smell hits you, you'll notice the mixture getting thicker and it'll all make sense (finally). Usually takes me about 2 minutes end-to-end. If you end up with a consistency that seems watery, use a flat edge (i.e. a knife or something) and add a bit more powder, then continue to stir. Conversely if it feels way too thick (like paste), add a half teaspoon of water and continue stirring. After you do it once, you'll get the hang of it.

Second, DO NOT do this after a shower or after washing your skin. It should probably be the first thing you do after getting up on the days you do it (which is every other day, NOT once a day). Why? You want your skin to be oily, to have some coating to protect it, in addition to the preshave. This is how you can get the best result without burning sensation. So don't wait until after showering to do this.

Now, prep your location. By prep, I mean use the preshave, something that is designed to protect your skin from burn and irritation. DO not use regular lotion, it won't do anything.

Now, it's important to note that this, when mixed, is essentially a plaster. It will go on wet and then dry, just like a cast. That's okay. But be prepared for it to "flake" everywhere. Try not to move too much. You don't want to make a mess.

Apply using the shave brush as if you were applying shaving cream or foam. But go in strokes against the grain. The goal is to lift the follicles and help the mixture do its thing. Make sure you get good coverage. You'll notice that the bottom of the mixture looks dry; that's okay. It'll still apply like a plaster. But feel free to drip a bit of water in there if you're not sure.

You'll need to wait between 7 and 10 minutes (depending on skin sensitivity) for the mix to work. During this time, clean out your mug and shave brush. The mixture should rinse rather cleanly in cold water, but the brush will take some hands-on help (it's safe). Depending on how long it stays on you may or may not feel a tingle. That's a good sign. It should not burn.

After the time has passed, this is where people get confused. You can use a dull pseudo razor (like Pseudo Shaver), if you want, but I found much better results just using a warm, damp towel. You can warm up the water while waiting for the mixture to dry, and if you use the disposables, have one that is your warm water towel and one that is your dry towel. Or you can use a single towel that serves both functions. Wipe the mixture off in firm, slow strokes against the grain. Then clean the towel off and go back over the area vigorously to get the remainder. Dry off with the other towel. Finish up with the aftershave.

If you did everything I noted above, you should see amazing results, with certain exceptions (I could never get the mixture to work at all above my mustache, it did 97% of the job in the groin area, and 99% of the work under my jaw). Figure 15 minutes total time to do. But again, you only need to do this once every other day minimum. My arms have been smooth for three days.

Since you're in Croatia, I think you can order from Amazon.com

Good razor would be the

[Merkur 34c] (Merkur HD 34C, Chrome Plated https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001LYAQ9E/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_yIhZxb4NXAWFH)

[Edwin Jagger DE89] (Edwin Jagger Kelvin Double Edged Safety Razor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00K6Z24SK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_.LhZxb6NNPK34)

For a brush you can get

[The purest](Satin Tip Shave Brush the Purest Luxury Synthetic, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01FG8M5NK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_aNhZxbB7GEY4G) it's a synthetic hair brush, very soft tips, works great.

[Fine Angel Hair](Fine 20mm "Angel Hair" Shaving Brush (Red & White) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ZAQLDBY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_bOhZxb9QF3A7C) another great synthetic.

For a soap you can get Proraso, Taylor of old Bond Street, Chiseled face has soaps on amazon, Barrister & Mann, WSP (wet shaving products), schafmilch rasierseife.

you can also do Arko, la Toja, or Palmolive, I wouldn't be surprised if you can find that locally either. Hope this helps!

u/BendydickCuminsnatch · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I can't say much about using a safety razor, but when I first started shaving with a double edge razor, I noticed that my skin felt irritated. It felt like it burned for the first few hours after shaving. I've always had sensitive skin, but my skin was never red even though it really felt like it should have been. As I continued shaving, I noticed that the burning sensation was getting shorter and shorter, and it eventually stopped after a couple of weeks. It may just be the combined irritation of the brush, soap, and razor, and you may just get used to it within the next week or two. Either way, go nuts with the sample packs and extras for shaving, it's the best way to find potential favorites!

One of the best 'extras' I got was a Styptic Pencil. If you don't have one, I'd definitely consider it for any accidental nicks.

Everyone is touting safety razors for a reason. Here is what you want...

Pick up a Merkur Classic safety razor.

Yeah I'm wanting to try MWF too but waiting for a bit being that i just fropped $160 on vintage DE's for restoring(hopefully) last night and $36 for the Truefitt&Hill sampler tonight, I may have full blown RAD. You could always try this Omega badger brush(now I wishlisted it). Ah nice, good lineup, how do you like the slant? No problem, I'll let you know if there is anything else I see.

u/yayikayran · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

If you don’t soak it in warm water for 5-10 min, you should do and then try it with a little more product and a few drops of water.

Post shave skin care.

If you knick yourself, a styptic like My Nik Is Sealed is nice. The ones with the roller ball is cleaner to apply than the chalky crayon type.

When done shaving, apply a witchhazel, a shave balm, and then if you like, an aftershave. With Proraso, I like the following. These are also popular "standard" products.

Thayer's Medicated with Aloe Vera . Witch Hazel without a scent doesn't smell good. Thayer's brand does pleasant scents. This one has alcohol, and they also make without, but I recommend try with first.

Nivea Post Shave Balm. This is also often available in regular stores, like Walmart.

Clubman Osage Rub After Shave. This menthol scent after shave isn't so much a standard, but IMO the way it numbs your face it is a must have. Refreshing in the hot summer.

u/drewwyatt · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Before the holy back I used [this guy](Perfecto 100% Pure Badger Shaving Brush-Black Handle- Engineered for the Best Shave of Your Life. For, Safety Razor, Double Edge Razor, Staight Razor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VF1NI5M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apip_PWUC6PoEdDuCw). I definitely like the Holy Black better for 2 (perceived) reasons: it lathers easier and is softer (or at least less poky). Again, I say perceived because I'm still new to this and my technique could just be improving. It also doesn't help that I've only used one other brush. Also: it looks really nice.

Hope that helps!

u/airbornesimian · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

For what it's worth, this is the brush.

I paid $35 USD for mine at the time. If the one that's available today performs like mine, I would say it's well worth $50 USD, because that would be an investment of approximately $4 per year on that brush.

That said, there are likely better options available. These two in particular are highly regarded from what I've seen so far in this sub:

Whipped Dog Silvertip Badger

Omega #11047

That Omega brush is actually a mix of boar and badger hair, which is pretty interesting.

Hope that helps!

u/vambot5 · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I use this brush. It was a gift, and you could possibly find a better brush for the price, but this one has been fantastic for me.

For cream, I would recommend the Taylor of Old Bond Street Avocado. All the TOBS creams I've used have made great lather, but the Avocado lather is exceptional. It also seems to be pretty non-irritating, which is good for a starter kit. Other scents like Eton College and Sandalwood smell great, but have essential oils that are a little bit irritating for my skin.

u/peterlcole · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Any specific suggestions? I just swapped the Van Der Hagen Men's Luxury, Shave Set for the Omega 63171.

I don't have to go through Amazon, but I thought it would make it easier for my dad to purchase and also if paying for shipping wasn't a concern then that would be a few more dollars to go into products.

u/nugget_pouch · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Nothing better about the TOBS block compared to this one at half the price. I am extremely partial to this one for its size, price, and storage case.

u/chchad · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

I have the Merkur Futur and I really like it, but that smooth satin handle gets slickery when wet. If I had to buy another, I would go with something like this.

I also bought this blade sample pack. The difference in blades is huge and it's all personal preference. I would've never known which ones worked best for me without these samples.

Add a My Nik Is Sealed Styptic Pen to your order. It took me 10 shaves before I didn't have to close a wound when I was done :)

u/EmptyAy · 2 pointsr/wicked_edge

Yes, definitely do your research and make sure you're buying a good brush. You can pick up an Omega boar for under $10, or a Semogue under $20.

All you need is one of these: Merkur HD Slant Safety Razor 37C and a box of these: 100 Feather Razor Blades NEW Hi-stainless Double Edge and you are set for a long time.

I shave two or three times a year, whether I need to or not (got to stay employed!), so I will most likely die before I make it through all my razors, but even if I shaved daily (the horrors!) I would still go this route. A dollar shave is an expensive shave!

Add a shaving brush, a mug, some soap, and a stand. If you know a better way to shave, that doesn't involve Peter Dinklage standing on the counter and doing it for you, then I want to hear about it.

Edited to add: A shave should be a pleasure. If you are not enjoying it, then you are doing it wrong.

u/notaneggspert · 1 pointr/business

Think I paid $50 total 5 years ago and I've still got blades and soap left

$10 antique store Gillette 1946 ball end-tech

$12 100 Astra Platinums I use 2 a month if that. (Didn't have to shave my whole face every other day till recently so I'll probably use ~30 blades a year at most from here out.)

$15 Cheap but good brush- I think from Target of all places but I'm sure this from amazon will do just as good of a job of lathering soap on your face.

$2-4 per tube Arko adventure shave soap. Haven't used up one of the three tubes I bought yet.

$10-15 for a stand. This appears to have gotten more expensive since I bought it.

And that's it. You don't need any more than that. You can spend more if you want. And I did buy a blade sampler to find what I like the most but still. I'm spending maybe $6 a year on shaving?!

It's not a BAD brush. In fact I quite like the handle, but I am not fond of the bristles. The weird thing is though I still might like it better than my Omega boar brush that's fully broken in. The WS brush constantly loses hairs though. Pretty much every shave it loses one.

u/etskinner · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Yep, this. Alternatively, 'my nik is sealed' liquid styptic.

u/reverendfrag4 · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

The shaveplace brush is intriguing. When browsing Amazon earlier I didn't care for some of the reviews on the Tweezerman.

The Omega and Colonel Conk looked decent, based on reviews, but I might spend a couple bucks more on that Grey's brush if you think it's worth it.

u/cryospam · 1 pointr/onebag

Ah man it's not a huge investment! They're SOOO much better than even the gillette platinum ones!

This is only 15 bucks for a solid handle. You can spend a lot more, but you don't need to.

Their blades aren't super expensive and they're noticably sharper than even the premium US brands and those you get from those boutique shops in the mall.

Match that with a solid Badger Hair brush and high quality moisturizing soap you're talking under 60 bucks total investment and it's a massive step up in quality and overall experience while shaving.

But for travel, a Defender razor with a pack of blades can't be beat. They're inexpensive, they are disposable, they last a reasonable amount of time, and apart from a premium safety razor, they shave closer than any other disposable I've found, even better than a mach 3, they also rinse super easy.

u/Number1AbeLincolnFan · 1 pointr/CasualConversation

You might consider switching to a safety razor. Cartridge razors don't work well with very thick hair.

Here is a pretty good place to start. Razor, brush, scuttle, cream

I personally use Feather blades, but you might consider a variety pack because blade preferences vary person to person.

It costs a bit of money up front, but your blades will only cost 25-35 cents afterwards, so if you are used to using a Mach 3, it will pay for itself in a couple years and will save you hundreds or thousands of dollars over a lifetime.

u/ak74guy · 1 pointr/AskDocs

I have sensitive skin on my face personally, I found a type of razor that actually helps to reduce the irritation. Safety razors (yeah I know kind of old school) But when using them it helps to reduce irritation significantly (at least in my experience) I personally use a Merkur safety razor. You can also get womens safety razors but for whatever reason they cost more. On top of that I use a boar hair brush, but some people prefer badger hair brushes as they are softer and are easier to use on softer soaps. Then go onto r/wicked_edge as they have tutorials on how to use the type of razors. You can also look for shaving soaps that contain aloe or things to soothe the skin during shaving. So look at the links and determine what would be best, you can also look further for other types of soaps, blades, and the razor itself. You will also need some sort of bowl to keep the shaving cream. You will and a stand to keep the soap from ruining the knot inside of the brush itself. This type of set up made it so I don't get ingrown hairs or irritation.

You could try a styptic pencil. Burns like the dickens for a few seconds, but stops bleeding.

u/IntrovertIdentity · 1 pointr/shaving

Years ago (around 2005), I fell for the Gillette M3 Power razor. After my first shave, I felt so ripped off. Plus, blades were expensive.

I researched safety razors and made the switch to a Merkur razor, Derby blades, Trumper shaving soap, and a 100% badger brush. I haven’t looked back. Yes, I paid a lot for my razor (and I would go with a more traditional one today if I could redo it). I have 100 blades for $9, which will last me over 2 years. I’ve been using the same soap since 2012. And I replace the brush whenever it feels like it needs to be replaced.

It does take a little while in getting used to, but it took me only a couple of weeks to get the swing of it. And with shaving soap, it won’t lather like the stuff in an aerosol can. But you don’t need lather. All you need is enough of a film to glide the blades over the skin to trim the whiskers.

I’d also recommend a travel case for the razor. That will protect the blades in transit. And I’d get a nick stick. I’ve been wet shaving with a safety razor for nearly 15 years, and an occasional nick does happen.

I have this travel shaving kit, and it has been excellent.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IBY9P12

It isn't expensive, but the razor is nicely weighted and a comfortable shaver. The travel case holds a pack of blades, and the included scissors are actually really good and handy to have when traveling.

I have a couple of brush tubes similar to this one to protect my brush:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0036BF97Y/

The soap and stuff just gets tossed in my dopp bag with my shampoo and stuff.

u/GexGecko · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I wouldn't pay 33 for a pure badger brush, especially not from Omega who specialize in boar and synthetics to my mind. If you can go outside of Amazon, get a "Finest" from FrankShaving Co, if not I'd use whatever capital you have left to upgrade to a better brush.

On Amazon I'd go for an Edwin Jagger brush probably, I have a best badger that has served me well for many years. Here Here and Here for example.

u/naval_person · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

Bought the same VDH kit myself at WalMart when starting out. Please don't make the same mistake I did -- don't assume that because this one VDH boar brush does a poor job for you (and sheds hairs like a mofo), therefore all boar brushes will do a poor job for you.

That's what I assumed, so I bought a number of badger brushes including LeisureGuy's expensive favorite "Rooney", only to discover a year later that the brushes which work best for me are the Omega $10 boar and the Semogue $20 boar. For me, heaven on earth is a shaving stick, a boar brush, and face lathering. That, or MWF soap bowl-lathered with a boar brush.

Here are some photos, if you shop around you can find better prices than these PIC.1 , PIC.2

Good luck, have fun!

You’re irritating your skin and not properly cutting the hairs. You needs to get the shaving cream under each hair so that it is raised and can be easily cut off. That is what gives you a clean shave. Please buy something like the below.

Perfecto 100% Original Pure Badger Shaving Brush. Engineered for The Best Shave of Your Life.for All Methods,Safety Razor,Double Edge Razor,Staight Razor or Shaving Razor, Its Best Badger Brush. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LDYFGFQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pnv2DbT4D5E8P

Put shave cream on bring and In a circular motion apply it to your neck and any shave area. Shave with the grain of your hair. This will clear up most of your problem and you will be happy. I promise.

/r/wicked_edge for alot of info but I just started shaving alone at 31! I started with a Shavette too so pretty hard. But my ritual works like a charm.

  1. Take a hot shower.
  2. when you are done. come out and wash your face with some Glycerene soap . Any some with the same contents works. I leave it for around 1 mins. Then apply shaving cream lather on top of it.
  3. Time to make some lather! use a brush it helps moisturizing and massaging the lather into your beard and pores. Two types of Brushes:

  • Synthetic hair brush. option one. Good option 2 cheaper Just keep in mind if you go synthetic then buy shaving creap and not soap.
  • Boar/Badger - You will need to pay up here. I went Silvertip Badger which is the finest but with the cheapest brush. This has a whole different prep so PM if you wanna shell out a few extra bucks but live in bliss. keep in mind that Synthetic is just as good.

  • Buy a shaving bowl or any soap bowl will do, take your brush into the soap/cream. For soaps creams buy something with Glycerine1 My favorite scent is this one 2. See this video to make lather

  1. Shave. With the grain or across as a beginner. A good Double edge safety razor to start with some blades very sharp so careful

  2. When you are done splash your face with some cold water onceor twice. Use an alum block around your face. If it burns alot it means you were too rough on that area. After that a splash of with hazel.

  3. Wait a few mins and use some nivea sensitive after shave balm

Remember always pat your face with the towel to dry. Dont rub.

Tips on how to shave with a DE are plentiful on youtube.

    Enjoy. Feel like a Boss.

u/ducatimechanic · 1 pointr/gaybros

Okay, I guess I can jump in here as I had to shave every day for about 13 years (college and then the Army) no matter the conditions, no matter how dirty or oily my skin was, and with no regard to the availability of electricity or light.

  • The first rule of shaving (okay, get the Fight Club jokes out of your systems) is to determine what kind of skin and hair you have.

If you're like me, a white guy with very curly and dense facial hair, you're going to face a lot of the same problems that black guys have with ingrown hairs (it's called Pseudofolliculitis barbae when it's widespread and pervasive - many guys in the military get what are called "shaving profiles" and never touch a razor, only trimming the hair with trimmers).

  • If you're like most guys in the United States, as soon as you registered for Selective Service at 18 Gillette sent you a razor in the mail (I know many guys that this was how they were introduced to shaving). A word of warning about "safety razors" of the disposable kind: more than two or three blades is a gimmick. They usually just strip away more skin, and then you're dealing with other issues.

A good first "safety" razor, and the disposable kind are actually less expensive than the ones you replace the cartridges, is the Gillette Sensor (either the 2 or the 3, referring to the number of blades).

    http://www.amazon.com/Gillette-Sensor3-Sensitive-Disposable-Razor/dp/B001F51QWK/ref=sr_1_3?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1375152325&sr=1-3&keywords=Gillette+Sensor3

I would stay away from the razors that are hinged at the rear, like the Fusion, as it seems that you need to put unnecessary force on your face to get good coverage, again irritating the skin.

  • If you're wanting to avoid all of this, and get a good electric razor, and I'm talking combat tested (because mine was in Iraq with me and survived bad charging, no blade change, dirty skin and hair, and basically abuse), Braun seems to have broken the code on the "twin foil" system. I currently have a System 5, which I keep as my trimming / travel razor, and you will find that they are both relatively inexpensive and do a good job (as long as you don't have a beard, and then you need a real trimmer, not the little thing attached to the shaver).

    http://www.amazon.com/Braun-Series-5-590cc-Shaving-System/dp/B001P5HCKK/ref=sr_1_2?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1375152622&sr=1-2&keywords=braun+series+5

This is just my opinion, but the multi-head shavers that are supposed to trace the contours of your face are just more hype that doesn't work well. Same with the ones that are wet/dry and squirt what's supposed to be lube on the blades before shaving and then need cleaning after. This is shaving, let's not get too crazy.

  • Now, if you want to step up to my level, and this will cover male grooming beyond your face, you need to be ready to invest in a few different things:

Oster professional clippers (you can trim a horse, sheer sheep, or rid yourself of pesky hair in places you'd rather not mention). I have a set of A5 clippers with multiple blades (the finer ones will cut skin if you're not careful).

    http://www.amazon.com/Oster-2-Speed-Professional-Animal-Clipper/dp/B000LRN31A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1375153214&sr=8-1&keywords=oster+a5

A true "double edged" safety razor. I've had a Merkur for almost a decade and it's bulletproof. One point in using this: shave in a quiet room so you can hear the "bite" of the blade on the hairs. Additionally, after every stroke, make sure you turn the razor over and use the other edge. For maximum blade life, do not use hot water.

    http://www.amazon.com/Merkur-Heavy-Double-Razor-Included/dp/B000QYEK88

Finally, ditch that nasty "shaving cream" that's just gunk and get yourself something real to lather your face with (okay, okay, get the jokes out of your systems): a proper mug, good soap, and a badger brush with make what can be a chore something else entirely.

    http://www.amazon.com/Col-Ichabod-Conk-Glycerin-Variety/dp/B0071B7XCO/ref=sr_1_3?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1375153718&sr=1-3&keywords=colonel+conk+shaving+soap

Colonel Conk is good, I'm a fan of their almond and bay rum, but there can be many others found out there if you look (try to stay away from repurposed soaps with no oil in them, they can make the razor "chatter" across the face).

Oh, and don't forget to put the soap inside of something presentable: There used to be some really awesome designs for getting the soap wet, and then letting the water drain out, but because of the lost market we seem to be left with a large coffee mug.

    http://www.amazon.com/Edwin-Jagger-Traditional-Porcelain-Shaving/dp/B000FIH8XO/ref=sr_1_6?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1375154310&sr=1-6&keywords=shave+bowl

Finally, there's the brush to get it on your face (some people say to just rub it on, but using a brush is like having a swarm of butterflies prepare you for a shave, as compared to putting on the goop with a spatula, so you decide).

    http://www.amazon.com/Parker-Safety-Razor-Bristle-Rosewood/dp/B002ET7AZ8/ref=sr_1_20?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1375154994&sr=1-20&keywords=shave+brush

You want a natural Badger bristle brush, but not one that is too soft, or it will just slop suds all over the place. Medium is good, so it's gentle to the face, but soft to the skin, and also holds the suds, seems to be pretty awesome (in other words, paying too much is just a waste).

  • The thing that you'll ask about, so I'd better tell you: the straight razor.

I've owned a Dovo / Solingen straight razor for over ten years and it is both the most useful and useless shaving tool that I own.

    http://www.shoeboxshaveshop.com/dostst4585sa.html

One thing to keep in mind is that you're bringing something that is, quite literally, suicidally sharp against your skin. For this reason alone, a straight razor should give you pause. There are no safeguards, and damaging the edge is very easy, and even if you don't do that, keeping the razor sharp enough so you can shave is a royal pain in the ass.

Now, there are some things that a straight razor does very well. If I have a beard, but don't want to get my clippers out and make a bunch of noise and get hair all over the sink, I get some warm lather going with my brush and soap (usually out of tubes as I'm through my supply of soap bars) and let it sit in my beard for a while as I strop my razor a few times to fold over the remaining imperfections in the blade. By the time I'm done with this, my beard is ready for another lather, as the soad is sort of dried, and I'll start near my ears pulling an inch or so of hair off at a time without making a mess (often having paper towel at the edge of the sink to wipe the blade on).

While this will get most of my beard, it will leave me still in need of a finish shave with a regular razor, but I haven't cut myself with the straight razor, and I haven't made a mess.

Each tool to it's own use.

  • An afterword. There a great many sites out there run by people who just aren't good at web design who sell great products, some of them were invaluable in me buying my gear over the years. Even if you're just looking for rare stuff as a gift, ebarbershop.com can be a great resource (I just wish it was easier to find stuff).
u/invisiblebob8616 · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

I have one of these guys for my brush (they're cheaper at Maggard's). I also put an Arko stick in there with it and just don't screw it in as far. As far as the razor, I have a Maggard's MRT with the leather travel pouch they offer for it that I use for travel. I also occasionally take my EJ DE89 with me in an Altoids tin with FrugalShave's insert.

u/magicker71 · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

You also will need some sort of shaving bowl or cup to lather your brush in. Edwin Jagger makes really nice ones if you want to match to your razor.

As the title states, I'm new to straight razor shaving. I've never been able to get a close shave with disposable/cartridge razors, so I've been wanting to try this for quite some time. I finally bit the bullet and put together a cheap kit (want to see how I'll like it before spending a lot of money), which arrived yesterday.

The razor is a cheap, sub-$20 one from Amazon

The brush is a Perfecto badger, also from Amazon

And the Old Spice lather mug belonged to my father. Not shown is the strop.

I shaved with this set-up for the first time last night! I may have to hone the razor a bit more. I knew it wouldn't come shave ready, so I honed it, and stropped the heck out of it, but I feel as though it could be a bit sharper yet. I did not attempt the curves of my jaw line this first time. I only shaved the flats of my face and the flatter parts of my neck, then finished up with a cartridge razor. I need to develop a better technique before I try dragging this thing around curves. Without a doubt though, where I used the straight razor is as smooth as a baby's bottom. I've never had this close of a shave before.

u/JewyMcJewington · 1 pointr/wicked_edge

This is the brush I use:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004OJS8E8

It's badger hair instead of the more traditional boar hair. It lathers really well and has broken in very nicely over the past 6 months I've used it.

As for blades, I prefer Personna's Made in USA razors. They've never let me down.

The one accoutrement I can't recommend enough is a block of alum. Alum is a natural astringent that closes up nicks and cuts better than anything else on the market. I can nick myself while rushing in the morning and running the alum under water then holding the block to the cut will make sure no one can even tell. It's extremely cheap, lasts for a long, long time, and you'll never use any other method again.

This isn't exactly what you're asking for, but it might help. Since I started using a different razor/shaving cream, razor burn is history and my complexion has gotten better.

Get yourself a nice double edged safety razor. I have a Merkur Futur. It isn't cheap, but It'll last a lifetime and blades are cheap as dirt. There are less expensive razors in the ~$30 range. It is easy to justify the cost when you realize you won't be paying much at all for the razors.

Get a brush (to apply shaving cream) - badger hair is the best. I have this: Omega Stripey Badger Hair Brush

Get a quality shaving soap. I used to use just these two: Proraso Eucalyptus and Colonel Conk's Bay Rum. Now, I'm favoring the Sensitive Skin Cream which may be more up your alley too. The proraso creams don't require a shaving bowl to store them in, but the Col. Conk does.

The other bonus is that using such a sharp blade (they are cheap enough to replace every 2-3 shaves w/o guilt) it also serves as a great exfoliant. My face feels awesome after I shave.

Well there's a treasure trove of information about advice at /r/wickededge, but personally I use an Edwin Jaeger (either DE86 or DE89, I forget), with Feather blades (I recommend not to try them until you're experienced with the safety razor, they're ridiculously sharp) and Proraso soap with Proraso preshave. Nah not really. If the priming and prep seems a little much, use the syn I linked or any of the other ones people have linked here. The thing with brushes is nobody agrees...rather like blades, on what type is best lol. It also depends on the soaps you like. Boars are good for hard soaps, badger or softer syns for softer soaps/creams (whether your bowl or face lather is also a factor). Hard soaps need more backbone from the knot. Also: one pro of syns is they dry rather fast. Usually if I shave in the morning before work my syn brushes, the S10077 or my Satin Tip Purest Black are dry by the time i get home. Boar, usually it isn't acceptably dry till the next morning and it isn't totally dry for 2 full days. All things to consider when getting a brush :).
