More info:

The model number to avoid is PCS-2506. (Post link is the exact item I ordered)

As I said in the title, the SL/SR buttons on the Joy Con do not line up with the grip. For clarity, this means you can't use the shoulder buttons in single-JoyCon play. SL doesn't work at all, and SR barely gets hit. This particular model is useless.

As an example, in Mario Kart you can't use items at all, and can only sort of drift.

I have not had the same issue with any other Joy Con grip/handle that I've ordered.

    EDIT: Pictures!

Here's an image of the whole thing. There's no wiggle room on either side.

This picture shows a closeup of the SL button while I'm holding down the left button of the grip/handle. You can just barely see the piece coming down and touching the SL button on the left side of the indent. It makes contact with the SL button, but not enough to register.

Here's a pic of the SR side. The Joy Con SR button actually does get pressed on the left side of the SR button, but just barely.

    EDIT2:

For further verification, here's a link to reviews about this same model, but sold by TOPACE

It's a bunch of 1-star reviews referencing the shoulder buttons not working.

    EDIT3:

For clarification, it doesn't matter which Joy Con (left or right) you put into either grip. The issue persists. It's just a bad design which defeats the purpose of the grips. It's a shame, because they look so nice!

    EDIT4: Update

AVIDET's customer service was very responsive, so props to them:

https://www.amazon.com.au/Fosmon-Anti-Slip-Silicone-Nintendo-Controller/dp/B071YFR1D2 i got these two weeks ago, they're cheap, comfy and don't interfere with the dock

They should be charging when the system is docked.

If they arent, then something may be wrong.

You could try a charging grip, which should keep them charged off of the system.

Or something like a Nyko charging block which should keep them charged when not attached to anything.

Have you updated them to the latest firmware?

I play my switch undocked 90% of the time, so I use this case along with these joycon shells. This setup is slim for me to carry it in my purse but will protect my switch against scratches, smudges and light drops even when I'm playing undocked at home. I have little kids, and they occasionally play on my switch, so I want to protect it as much as possible.

I use these from Amazon. They work alright, but the pads could be a bit bigger. I think there are cases that cover the whole switch with grips on the back but I haven't looked into it.
