I have switched to Paleo for the anti-inflammatory properties of the diet. I was diagnosed with MS in 2005. When I switched to Paleo, it changed my life.... I recently was introduced to this book from Dr. Terry Wahl.

Here is a TED Talk that should make you reconsider your diet.

I bought The Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook, and found it a helpful introduction. One thing I dislike about is it that it tries to give a 4 week plan, but the recipes aren't made for all seasons. For example, there are some soups I know I won't try for a while. Also, some of the recipes look really good but contain hard to find ingredients (none of my local CA grocery stores carry blood oranges). Many of the recipes are good (made the apple crumble with peaches/blackberries and it was to die for!) but sometimes the obvious substitute recipes fall flat (I'm sorry, but you can't have "garlic mayo" with that much coconut. It just doesn't work). I would buy it again - it was just so helpful getting started.

I also recently bought He Won't Know It's Paleo which is actually an AIP book as well. I haven't had this one as long, but I've mostly tried the baking recipes. If you're looking for an AIP substitute that people won't know is AIP, look elsewhere. But damn, after not eating real brownies for a long time, the cacao brownies taste almost as good to my palate. But there in lies the danger: if you're the only one willing to eat this because of your starved palate, you may end up eating more than you intended. The best dinner recipe in this is for the lettuce wraps, which the author has posted online. I've got to try more of the recipes before giving a full review. I would prob be disappointed if I spent $30 on this one.

  1. Like /u/jetpackmalfunction said, prep everything ahead of time. This part really can't be overstated.

  2. Seriously, assemble your mise.

  3. Become familiar with the recipes you intend to use. Cook it once before recreating it in a high stakes environment (like thanksgiving) if you can.

  4. Same way you get to Carnegie Hall, practice. Getting everything to the table at the right time is what separates the men from the boys. This is a skill, so be a little patient with yourself while you learn it.

  5. There are two cookbooks that I can recommend that list the menu timing for things that can be made ahead, things that can be held, and things that have to be done last minute. Great Dinners from Life (also great if you love vintage cookbooks) and Gather (yes, it's a paleo cookbook, but every menu has a section on timing the dishes)

  6. Spreadsheets. For something like Thanksgiving dinner I have a spreadsheet that starts one week out and gets down to five minute increments the closer it gets to dinner time. I have this made up by the first week of November. (I may be a little obsessive)

24 years old is a great time to take a cooking class and learn some valuable life skills, look at this as an opportunity instead of a challenge.

I think it's easy to look at recipes and get overwhelmed, but cooking is as complex or simple as you want to make it. A perfectly fine paleo dish is a piece of chicken and side of broccoli.

>I love eggs, steak, salads, and fruit. But I can't eat that every day.

Why not? If that's what you like to eat, go for it. You can round it out later.

If you have access to a kindle reader, there are tons of free kindle cookbooks. I found this beginner cookbook very useful (not free anymore).

I've not used any recipes yet, but the books by Thug Kitchen look awesome. Really good design and high quality photos. I think even omnis would appreciate the recipes (and humour) in there.

Kettlebells are a wonderfully versatile tool for both cardio and strength training. They're a favorite because most exercises make me feel like a badass :D, because a single tool (or two) can give you a well-rounded workout, and because they teach core engagement in a way that prepares you to do... everything else. (Including age gracefully, there's an exercise called the turkish getup that is my strongest recommendation for older people looking to stay healthy.) The most common exercises are the swing, snatch (I know, stop giggling), clean and press, farmer's walk (okay, this video is dumbells instead, but you see how it could be kettlebells, and the form demonstration is excellent) and turkish getup.

A baking scale should work just fine for helping you track food! Food tracking in general is best done by weight, just like baking, so just so long as it can measure at least a pound you should be fine. People as a rule are fantastically terrible at knowing what they are eating and how much they are eating. And it's pretty hard to make a change until you actually know where you are, right? Which is why I reccomend beginning with tracking calories and macros.

Ah, we haven't discussed macros. I encourage you to start thinking about how you eat in terms of macros. These are the carbs, protein, and fats you've heard so much about. Total calories are what controls your mass (whether you gain or lose weight) and macros + exercise or lack thereof is what determines the kind of mass you have/gain/lose. In very, very general terms: Carbs are meant to be quick access energy. If they aren't used, they get stored as fat and contribute to bad-news-bears stuff like insulin resistance. So when you increase your calories to gain weight, you'll want to focus on adding protein and fats. Protein is basically the raw source material for muscle. Fat does get stored as fat if it's unused, but doesn't contribute to metabolic syndrome and helps with recovery from physical exercise.

Cooking! While you don't have to cook to eat healthy, it's certainly easier, cheaper, and often tastier than trying to eat well otherwise. I reccomend you start with a smaller commitment, just lunches. For my lunches during the week, it's classic weekend cookup style. I make a big batch of something and eat it every day (which also makes tracking it a breeze- total everything as it goes in, and divide by five. Then myfitnesspal allows you to just 'copy yesterday'). It's a lot less pressure than dinners (for which you can keep doing what you're doing for now) and is a great way to practice your new 'thinking in macros' strategy. Your lunches should be about half veg by volume, and should include a protein. A starch should be an afterthought, a flavoring element not a staple. I reccomend this cookbook and the sequel very strongly both for learning how to cook in a cookup style, but also for learning how to structure meals as protein + vegetable.

Dividing the foods you want to limit into small containers can definitely help- Honestly for candy, I'd make it by the ounce. Easy to keep track of and know exactly what you're doing when you eat it, harder to lie to yourself about. But really the candy-battle isn't fought in the house- it's fought in the grocery store. Don't shop hungry, and just don't buy candy in the first place. Do make a point to buy fruit for now though, and substitute that during your normal 'candy' eating time. It's still carb, but it's less of a blood-sugar spike and gets you some dietary fiber which you probably need. (Don't google diverticulitis. Unless you need to be motivated to eat fiber.)

You must be a Monsanto shill! For anyone else who may be reading this, there are quite a few books written that talk about how bad for you grains are, and many of them mention legumes, as well. Oh, and I can't forget the Paleo diet book! https://www.amazon.com/Paleo-Diet-Weight-Healthy-Designed/dp/0470913029%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAILSHYYTFIVPWUY6Q%26tag%3Dduckduckgo-osx-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0470913029. These books all have hundreds of comments from people claiming their health improved after cutting out legumes and grains. I personally went from being very, very sick on a mostly vegetarian diet high in grains and legumes to almost cured of my illness after cutting out the grains and legumes completely.

Make Ahead Paleo is fantastic. Great, simple recipes you can make ahead, not the 14 hour cooking marathons a lot of other paleo books put you through.
