This puzzle! Kids like to leave it assembled and take off one piece and put it back on over and over causing the siren to repeatedly sound. It's awful. And as a parent you feel bad taking away a puzzle they enjoy. Melissa & Doug Fire Truck Sound Puzzle https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001EGOIIY/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_5irMxbFGFTRNC

Mine was into tea parties at that age. I got her a really cute tea set and some fake cupcakes and cake. She liked to set it up with her baby dolls and have tea time. She is 4 now and still plays with it daily so it’s definitely been a toy that’s lasted. Hers is similar to this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07V9DQN5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Vk3NDbB23HGF3

She also really started to get into puzzles at that age too! So that could be a idea too. These are the kinds she liked at that age

I thought this was going to be one of those wooden peg puzzles.

I've found similar problems.. I wanted to get a wooden block puzzle for one of my nephews... and I was really disappointed that the once simple wooden puzzle for a toddler now has sound.

I'm the only deaf person in my family but I refuse to buy a toy that unnecessarily has sound. It's a puzzle not a see-and-say.

To answer your question any toy that builds motor skills are fine. Simple wooden blocks are great toys. I found a great deal on a set of wood blocks but just keep in mind some block sets might have pieces that are too small for a 1 yr old. I had to cull the set and the ones that are too small will wait in storage until he's old enough. (An easy way to check: if it can fall through a toilet paper tube, it's too small for a 1 year old.)

For anyone curious, this is what I found.. the theme was different but the concept and brand was the same.

Thought of another thing!

We do a lot of these chunky puzzles

I love them because it works on puzzle piecing, animal sounds, for hide and seek, & then we also play with them like figurines. So they have a lot of uses.

I bought puzzles. I take the pieces, and ask my son what the letter is before I let him have it. It took a few times, but he's 2 and knows all his letters by sight, upper and lower case, and numbers 0-9 by sight. Now, we're working on the sounds of letters, he's got about 10 of them down so far.

This is a good one. I also have magnetic letters on the fridge that he plays with when I'm cooking.

Braille Blocks

Of course, I've always been partial to blocks and building.

Oh.. and my kids loved these puzzles. They have sound.

So I really like the Wirecutter gift guides. Here's the 1 year-old guide and the 2 year-old guide. They have toys in a bunch of different budgets. From those guides, I got my daughter the piggy bank and the Crate and Barrel chair.

For a big present, assuming you have the space, here are some options:

  • A kid-sized table and chairs. She'll start to want to draw (well scribble) and color (also scribbling) or play with smaller toys and it's nice to give her a place to do that that's the right size.
  • Some sort of scooting toy. The hopper in the gift guide is one, we got this giraffe scooter. Size can be an issue, so you might want to look at a couple.
  • One of the play kitchens or work benches is good as a big present. This IKEA kitchen is popular, although it doesn't come with a lot of stuff like pots and pans or fake food.
  • If you're handy at all, an activity table (here's an example) or an activity board (here's an example) can be a DIY project although it's getting a bit down to the wire for that.

For clothes, Primary is a good place for high quality, solid colors, basic patterns, gender neutral stuff, that sort of thing. For more girl specific, I like the stuff at Princess Awesome because it's not traditional girly girly stuff.

Aw happy birthday Little Miss Accountant! 8 seems like a great age. My own Little Miss Smart is turning 1 in about a week! I love her so so much, I never knew I could love someone like that until she was born (she is my first). This has been the longest and shortest year of my life and I'm so happy to celebrate her first year with her soon. Because I like spoiling my baby girl, how about a puzzle?

Thanks for the contest and reminding me how much I love my little. :D

puzzle

push toy

walkeR and ride on -this was a favorite of my sons for a long, long time, and I've often said it was the best $ I ever spent, that kids loved it so much.

pull toy

If you want to up it, get wooden versions of them. They are learning to walk at that age, so toys that focus on walking are a really big hit.
